Sheriff reports four or five young men attacked farmer David Hoskins 32, shot him, and set his home ablaze. Loretta Hoskins 29 found dead in embers. children Julie seven, Darla five, Linda fourteen, infant David Eli six weeks missing. Teens alerted authorities after spotting the fire near St. Cloud.
Mrs. Mueller describes a man dying in a farmhouse fire with two gunshot wounds. He insisted on returning to the farm to be with his wife and children as three men restrained him.
Mrs. Mueller says teenagers found Hoskins with a towel over his face while a black hood was reported earlier. David Hoskins' father Leo, from a nearby farm, saw the flames and rushed to the home but could not enter the burning house and suffered burns trying to save them.
The Senate approved an aid bill 60 to 26 after four days of debate authorizing 837 million less than Johnson sought and 537 million below the House recommendation. The measure ends presidential power to add countries without Congress and bans aid to nations that broke relations with the U S, targeting Arab bloc states. The State Conservation Division estimated that Kansas crude oil pipeline runs rose by 3,880 barrels per day for the week ended Aug. 14, averaging 276,675 barrels daily. The current allowable limit remains 290,000 barrels per day.

Wyandotte County deputies recovered a cache of stolen goods in Edwardsville cemetery including two suitcases of dynamite. Seven suspects were arrested as investigators link the haul to thefts across Johnson Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties. Other stolen items include 15 tires from Linwood, a color television and seven 100 pound bags of almonds.
Grace M. Shugart of Kansas State University was named president elect of the American Dietetic Association. Mary C. Zahasky of the University of Oklahoma Medical Center became president as the group marks its 50th anniversary meeting in Chicago.

Police received a 6:30 a.m. call about a bird in a Main Street apartment. A patrolman captured the intruder, a startling jailbird, and took it to jail on the south side where it flew out the window.
