Joe the talking Mynah bird goes missing after vandal

Kenneth Woods kept Joe in a cage at the Chanute fire station until 6 30 this morning when a cat was found inside the cage. Fire Chief Bill Brennan says the bird, given to the station a decade ago, entertained hundreds and a $25 reward is offered for information on the act.

Industrial Fund Drives and Traffic Study OKd by C of C

The Chanute Chamber of Commerce directors approved two civic actions. They backed the Burgwin and Martin traffic study for Main street and approved plans to create an industrial development fund via a communitywide stock sale in the Chanute Development Co. The fund would aid smaller industries and is modeled after successful programs in nearby towns, with details to be announced later.

Twins Net Rich Spider Catch Near Thayer Park

David and Douglas Osborn, twin sons of Mr and Mrs Bill Osborn of Thayer, found a female tarantula with many freshly hatched offspring at the northwest edge of Thayer near the ball park. They trapped the spiders by guiding them into a fruit jar. observers estimate about 200 babies. The father displayed the jar at The Tribune, but a photo attempt failed to develop for publication.

Erie County adopts new budget with modest levy rise

County commissioners approved the proposed Neo sho county budget for next year with no objections after a public hearing at the courthouse. John Lapham of Chanute attended as the sole visitor. The plan is based on a countywide levy of 37.61 mills, up 0.41 mill from the current year and mirrors most provisions of the 1964 budget.

A church bus carrying 65 members collided head on with seven vehicles on U S 101 in California. Bowyer elected Neosho County GOP chairman in courthouse vote

Wendell Bowyer Chanute was elected chairman of the Neosho County Republican central committee at a courthouse meeting. He succeeds Robert N. Allen who had led since 1960. Edna Peterson was re elected vice chair, Nina Long secretary, and Pauline Page treasurer. The group aims to prep for the state central committee meeting in Topeka on August 25. About 50 attended, including 34 committee members and proxies, with several state and county candidates present.
