Kennedy Bill Wins Second Round in Wage Fight

The Senate rejected a Republican substitute aimed at weakening Kennedy's minimum wage bill. The Prouty proposal would have trimmed coverage by about 867,000 workers, exempting many auto dealers and hospitality workers, while keeping the core wage floor at 1.25 dollars. Democrats argued the substitute would leave the lowest paid workers out of the Fair Labor Standards Act. The Dirksen alternative would have kept the floor at 1.15 dollars and was defeated earlier.
