European Grain Boom Could Pressure U S Exports

A USDA Foreign Agriculture Service report notes Western Europe may raise wheat and feed grain output to record levels due to larger acreages and better yields. Last year Europe’s output fell 4 percent from 1969’s peak, but 1970 harvests could top 120 million tons. The rise comes as U S farmers near a record wheat and feed grain crop and exports hit a 7.8 billion dollar year. With growing European stockpiles, competition in world markets could intensify beginning Oct 1, even as dock strikes threaten shipments.
