The city commission approved the next year’s budget without change after a public hearing last night. Attending were Mr and Mrs Bert Farmer and M W Wilson. Mrs Farmer asked questions about the budget while City Manager R J Hayes explained two reserve funds for emergencies and revenue bond requirements.
A public hearing on Neosho county budget for next year is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday in the county commissioners room at the Erie courthouse. The plan keeps a 37.62 mill countywide levy, up 0.41 mill, not counting the high school equalization levy. The proposed total is 2,229,126.43 dollars, up 305,464.77 from 1964, mainly due to carryover of cumulative funds.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Harry G. Wiles unveiled a 13 point program covering education finance and a state foundation plan, school vocational training, and non tax funding. He urged reapportionment, open meetings, highway reform, elderly credits, and modernization of government while detailing county welfare costs, bonds, and budget rules.

In Kirkland Lake Ontario a rock fall at the Wright-Hargreaves Mine traps two miners near the 4000-foot level as 65 others escape. The missing are Donald Yeworski, 45, and Edouard Duchesne, 55, both residents of Kirkland Lake. rescue is paused by subsequent rock falls. The mine extends over 8000 feet underground.
In Mena Arkansas three Cade children Wayne 13 Delia 11 and Linda 9 were vaccinated for smallpox by order of the state Supreme Court after a lengthy religious dispute with their farmer father Archie Cude. Sheriff deputies restrained the children while Dr Calvin Austin administered the vaccines. One deputy was bitten during the struggle.
