Chanute residents reported bright three flash light events and power outages at 10 30 pm. later daylight showed a transformer short blamed on a dead hawk caught in lines. Officials ruled out a real UFO and described the incident as a faulty electrical issue.
In Kansas City Ford and Reagan supporters seek the needed delegates three days before the GOP convention. Upi reports Ford at 1122 and Reagan at 1035 with 102 uncommitted, as platform writers rush to finish a Republican program addressing abortion, education funding, and prayer.
In a hospital room a teen suspect spoke of his motive for the downtown shooting. Michael Soles 19 of Sand Springs Okla arraigned on three murder charges with bail set at 1 million. The third victim Mark Falen 23 of Wichita died. two others killed and seven wounded as police returned fire from a hotel balcony.
The forecast shows high near 89 Thursday and 84 today with low humidity. Tonight remains fair and warm with lows around 70, then partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms Saturday and highs in the upper 80s. Southeasterly winds 10 to 15 mph.
The two city commissioners adopted a 1977 budget rising from 7.54 million to 9.39 million, a roughly 25 percent increase. Upgrades include doubled water plant capacity to six million gallons daily and a new fire engine, with rate reductions of about 7 percent for commercial properties and 10 percent for dwellings under certain plans.
Thursday contracts signed for the Neosho Memorial Hospital expansion with hospital trustees John McMeekin and Charles Henshall, contractor B. B. Anderson of Topeka, and architects Hewitt and Royer Kansas City. A pre construction conference followed and ground breaking is set for 10 a.m. August 23 at the site.
