Doctor Shot By Patient at San Antonio Mental Hospital
Dr. Robert P. Hargreaves, former Ft. Leavenworth chief of prison psychiatry, was killed Thursday by patient George T. Shannahan, 61, at the San Antonio State Mental Hospital. Shannahan shot Hargreaves then killed himself with a .38 revolver. Shannahan had been a patient since 1957 and had privileges permitting unsupervised movement. Dr. Callan, acting superintendent, said the gun’s source is unknown and Hargreaves had joined the hospital staff in 1960 after Army retirement.
