Leah Babcock marked her eighth birthday with a party hosted by Mr and Mrs Warren Babcock at 611 N Steuben from 11 to 1 PM. The gathering featured hot dogs cupcakes snow cones and drinks with blue and red decorations and a large doll buggy as a gift from her grandmother.
The Rainbow HD unit met for 9 o'clock coffee Friday with Mrs H M Kemmerer assisted by Mrs V S Kessinger. Mrs A O Dimon presided as nine members answered roll call with first aid practice. Civil defense lesson given by Mrs J W Ames and Mrs Ben Hupp. Next meeting set for Sept 9 with Mrs C E Welsh.
Mrs Irwin Ingraham and Mrs W D Weber led a Civil Defense lesson at the Rural Homemakers HD unit meeting in Highland Park on Thursday afternoon. Roll call noted first aid practice. Mrs Ernest Kepley presided at the business session. refreshments served to six members and four children. The next meeting will be with Mrs Kepley.

A question arises whether saying Mr Jones this is my secretary Miss Brown is correct or should one say Miss Brown this is Mr Jones. Ever Ready 4 H member Florence Roberts reported 80 counties represented at Junior Leadership camp at Rock Springs Ranch. Sessions covered junior leadership in 4 H exhibits and club meetings with C R Roberts urging quality vegetables to boost farming practices.
Lester Griffith Wilson county agent attended the Pleasant Valley Rockets 4 H meeting Monday night and showed slides for a special program. Nine members answered roll call with plans for exhibits at the Fair. Reports covered 4 H camp and proceeds from the ice cream social.
The IC Guild of Evangelical United Brethren church held a Friday afternoon gathering in the church parlor. Thirteen members answered roll, with Mrs. Elmer Oliver presiding and Mrs. Lyle Clark leading devotions. Mystery sisters were revealed in a gift exchange and names drawn for the next three months. Mrs. John Roth and Mrs. Charles Ward led refreshments, with garden flowers on the table. The next meeting is Sept 9 hosted by Mrs. William Miller and Mrs. Paul Life.

Eleven couples entered Scotch Foursomes at the country club Friday evening with Marjorie Cook as chairman. Miss Cook and John Nation won first prize with a 42. Awards went to Mrs. John Nation and Arch Allen for most 4s, Mrs. G W McDowell and Dr R V Cartwright for low on five, and Mrs. Bill Porterfield and Bob Koch for high on nine. Mr. and Mrs. Porterfield will chair next Friday.
Monday events list Duplicate Bridge night hosted by Mr and Mrs Bill Peters at 5 S Larson at 7 30 PM Rebekah Lodge gathering at Ord Fellows hall at 5 PM with details focused on local club activities and venues.
The Dorothy Tiegreen guild of Grant Avenue Baptist church gathered at Mrs. Neal Kepley 310 N Washington last night. A baby shower honored infant Diane Kay three weeks old with gifts from Debbie Kepley 3. Seventeen attendees enjoyed refreshments and a formal evening.
Five tables were formed for Ladies day bridge in the Country club lounge Friday afternoon. High score award went to Mrs. Jo Payne, with Mrs. Lee Judy, Marjorie Cook and Jane Brookhart following. Consolation prize was awarded to Mrs. Charles Wig gans. Carol Cady attended as a guest and hostesses are planned for upcoming Fridays by Mrs. Bill Peters and Mrs. Robert Wilson.
A city crew is laying about four miles of new four six and eight inch pipe with hydrants as part of Butler Street improvements. Mayor Cleo I Dalton says work by regular city employees uses a tractor digger and the latest pipe. Residents may see lower fire insurance rates after completion.

The bride will teach in Wellington schools next term and the groom joined the military August 5. Mr and Mrs Herman Hudson of rural Parsons visited the Powers family with Beth Hudson staying longer.
Grandson Terry Kiser visits Topeka for a stay with his mother and the Webber family. Mr and Mrs Jack Rice spent several days with the John Tyler family who now reside on a farm near Neosho Falls.
Eugene Cox Jeleene and Sue are Mr and Mrs John Jones and Mrs Carrie Cox of Chanute. Mr and Mrs Floyd Jones Mrs Mary Jones Mr and Mrs Edgar Jones and Charles of Hepler. J C Siem, in Katy Hospital Parsons, is reported by Mrs Siem to be improving satisfactorily.

Parsons city commission voted 2 to 0 to drop the injunction action against Jarboe-Cowling Cattle Co. filed December 15, 1953. The suit claimed the company operated a feed lot on 170 acres at Parsons northern edge, feeding cattle.
Officials say operation of nearby cattle lots sources 12000 to 15000 head yearly causes public nuisance with dust flies and tench posing health hazard to city residents.
