Seventy two hour search at the Titan II missile launching site in Searty Ark ends with 53 dead after six more bodies found on lower silo levels. Air Force officials say civilians likely perished from asphyxiation as smoke filled the underground complex.
Rescue teams in asbestos suits battled through a smoke filled Titan II launching tube near Searcy Arkansas. Officials said 48 to 50 workers were trapped after a blast and fire at the Peter Kiewit crewed site. Eight Air Force personnel escaped unharmed.
The Justice Department moved to strike down state poll taxes in Texas Virginia and Alabama under the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Three-judge court hearings were requested with court orders invalidating poll taxes for state and local elections and creating new voter lists. Federal registrars will continue collecting polls in nine counties in Louisiana Alabama and Mississippi during the pendency.
Federal team opened at Selma Alabama and nine counties across Alabama Louisiana and Mississippi to register voters. About 50 Negroes lined up at the Selma post office as registrars noted literacy tests and prior failed attempts. Eritology describes hardships and early registrations in Plaquemines East Carroll and nearby counties.
Darrel Rash aged 39 of Wichita died in a hospital from injuries in a Monday night motorcycle collision with a truck. His wife Judy, 16, was in critical condition with two leg fractures. The truck was driven by Dean Taylor 19 of Hutchinson who was not injured.
Kansas traffic death log for 24 hours to 9 am Tuesday shows five deaths in August 1965, with a comparison to 1964. Two previously unreported deaths bring the total to 375 for 1965 and 379 for 1964.
The United Mine Workers welfare and Defense Fund announced total disbursements of 114.58 million dollars for the year ended June 30, covering pensions medical care and other benefits.
Army commanders in South Vietnam are asked to report how many enlisted men under 18 serve in the war zone and whether any violate regulations. Officials note about 68,000 under 18 are in the armed forces nationwide, with 17,000 in the Army and 30,000 in the Air Force.
In Vietnam last week two Chanute servicemen, Ben Wheat and Francis Berthoz, who attended Chanute High School, unexpectedly reunited in the jungle. Wheat, a captain in special forces, and Berthoz, a specialist fourth class, are to work together for a month under extreme heat nearing 130 degrees.
At a Garnett budget hearing about 40 residents criticized the Police Department as spending too much while not providing enough protection. They warned they would seek recalls of Mayor Gwinn Shell Police Chief Bill Gray and Commissioner Everett Burns if outlays were not reduced within two weeks.
Four Kansas oilmen including Donald J. Belisle of Northern Petroleum and Sylvester J. A Cuban seaman admitted killing five of eight crew on the banana boat Seven Seas after rising from a skiff in the Gulf Stream. The only survivor, Elvin Burgwaise, hid in a chain locker as the vessel veered toward Cuba.
A three car crash at 14th and Central yesterday at 4 30 p m caused about 1500 in damage. Drivers were Leota E Frank 19 Neal R Moyer 22 and Earl K Wilson 28. Frank 1956 Plymouth went east, Moyer 1964 Chevrolet north, and Wilson 1960 Volkswagen was nearly stopped westbound. Frank sustained 300 damage, Moyer 1000, and Wilson 200.
City commission discussed architect Jim Blessing’s Santa Fe Park master plan including a playground zoo rides and parking lot. Board approved sketches with minor changes and will delay park improvements until a formal action plan is set. Blessing outlined four phases for completion.
