Viet Cong riflemen shelled the Duc Co camp near the Cambodian border where 12 Americans and over 150 mountain tribesmen and Vietnamese hold out. A U S Army helicopter unit rescued after locating only a parachute as Viet Cong fire intensified.
Kansas traffic death log reports 48 hours ending 9 a.m. Monday noting 2 fatalities for August and 378 fatalities for the comparable period in 1964.
Twenty two more registrations bring total entries to 77 in the Chamber of Commerce big cat fish contest for catfish from the Neosho River in Neosho county between July 1 and November 1. Registration at official stations in Chanute required. weigh-in at an official station with no residence limits.
Otto A. Epp announced a 22 member advisory panel to develop vocational technical education. Members come from education labor industry agriculture and business and occupation groups plus the lay public. First meeting planned for early fall.
Winston A. Winter of Ottawa Kansas is elected chairman of the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Section. He succeeds Robert Muckles stone of Seattle under the automatic succession rule.
The Erie fat stock sale closed a three day county fair schedule with 50 calves 49 hogs and 16 fat lambs sold. Grand champion steer Joe Lon Smith Walnut weighed 930 pounds fetching 43 per cwt from Stark State Bank. Other top results include Judy Smith Walnut with a 220 pound grand champion pig sold for 63 per cwt to First State Bank of Thayer and Judy Boecker Chanute with a 75 pound grand champion fat lamb sold for 121 per cwt to Bank of Commerce Chanute. The reserve champ pig sold for 37 per cwt to Bauer's Market Chanute while the reserve grand champion steer and fat lamb went to the state fair. Ralph Willson Erie won the free shetland pony pulling contest among 24 teams.
In Tooele and Grantsville Utah residents collect signatories to support the escapee Melvin Hurley also known as Tilton Hall a former WV penitentary inmate who confessed to escaping in 1948 He lived among locals for 16 years and worked as a railroad section hand on the West Coast. Hall waives extradition and faces return to West Virginia authorities.
The Ku Klux Klan held a silent march and rally in Americus with 600 marchers and 75 robed Klansmen. Police stood by as a civil rights demonstration nearby yielded calls for a biracial committee. Two Negroes face murder charges in the death of Andrew Whatley after the Klan event.
Charles Hurst reported he was attacked near 7th and Steuben by three men including two Negroes and a white person who beat him with screen door springs after he gave them a match. A dark 1956 Chevrolet with an Allen County tag was seen. Carmen Colston and Billy Hawes said they received threats after recent involvement with Humboldt Brick and Tile plant strike picket lines.

They also opposed repeal of Section 14B of the Taft Hartley Act, reinstated a fall meeting at Pratt, and planned awards programs at Ashland and an air rifle tournament in McPherson.
The Seven Seas, a 125 foot Panama flag vessel, sailed from Miami toward Tampa drydock with four crewmen dead and others missing. Only one of eight aboard survived, Elvin Burgwaise stating the first mate and captain were killed and two other crewmen shot. Coast Guard and FBI agents waited at Key West docks for details.
President Johnson signed a 280 million health research bill and announced a high level task force to set national goals in education health and child welfare. He spoke at the National Institutes of Health and noted Surgeon General Luther Terry will resign to join the University of Pennsylvania.

Senate Democratic Leader Mansfield says no shift in strategy was indicated after the 1 hour 45 minute session with top advisers. Boyer manager of Midwest Auto Store reported a Saturday incident involving a bad check for 47.50 drawn on First National Bank to Ralph Newsome and signed by Benny Farris Jr. The check was endorsed by the passer who claimed to be Ralph Newsome. The subject drove a blue and white late-model Dodge or Plymouth station wagon with a Missouri tag. tag checked and followup underway.
Former Kansas state treasurer George Hart announced he will seek the 4th District congressional seat next year. In a typed statement he criticized Republican Rep. Garner E. Shriver’s voting record and said a Kansas Democrat delegation would be heard by the national administration.
Nagasaki citizens bowed in prayer at 11 02 am marking the 20th anniversary of the atomic bombing that killed about 75000 people. Prime Minister Eisaku Sato urged a worldwide ban on nuclear weapons as 1100 Roman Catholics held a memorial mass at Uragami Cathedral.
Topeka reports a return to seasonal temperatures after an autumn-like spell. Overnight lows ranged from 52 to 65 across eastern Kansas with highs from 82 to 93 in various towns. Tonight and Tuesday bring mostly clear skies, a few showers in western Kansas, and highs reaching the upper 90s in the northwest.
James J. Herndon 43 a patient at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Wadsworth Kansas drowned on Sunday in Lake Jeanette on hospital grounds. The incident appears accidental. He came from Columbia Missouri and had been a patient since 1963. His mother Mrs. Laura Hendron of Columbia survives. The body was taken to Parker Funeral Home in Columbia.
