Draft Lottery Held As 19-Year-Olds Face Service
Washington AP reports Selective Service conducted a lottery to set the order for men turning 19 next year amid a legal limbo after the draft law expired June 30. Congress is not expected to act until after summer. About two million 1952 birth year men exist, with only a fraction likely to be drafted as the Pentagon plans 114,000 draftees for the year ending next June 30. Vietnam War winding down reduces calls. Draft Director Curtis W. Tarr, ill with the flu, issued a statement emphasizing the process.
