Erie officials announce a plan to start a $500000 Neosho County courthouse project after the first of next year. Bids will open about Dec 1 with construction starting ~30 days later. The 56 year old courthouse is settling. a geological survey shows solid rock 32 feet underground and about 30 concrete pilings will support the new building.
Forecast shows considerable cloudiness tonight with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Friday partly cloudy with high temperatures in the 90s and lows 70s. Rains yesterday centered in southern Kansas. measurements varied by location from 0.76 to 2.70 inches. Highs yesterday ranged from 80 to 94 degrees across the state.
Mrs. Mary Buchan, 40, of Wichita, died in a collision on U S 54 near Wichita when her station wagon crossed into the wrong lane and hit Rex Thompson of Frontier Village whose car was not seriously injured. Authorities identified the drivers and stated no other injuries were reported.
Pittsburg AP report describes mix up at Mt Carmel Hospital where two women named Mrs John Nepote, both in Room 335, had newborn sons listed under Dr D H Wood. One wife is a Pittsburg police clerk's spouse. the other husband is a Frontenac bricklayer. their husbands are cousins.
Chanute’s 1962 budget features a five mill city tax levy down from six mills, with utilities revenues funding most operations and transfers totaling $526,515 to bond, general, library, equipment, and airport funds. City Manager R J Hayes cautions the levy would require state approval if taxes funded all services, notes bond and interest debt, and outlines planned equipment funds and public hearing details.
Federal agents retook a Continental Airlines Boeing 707 near El Paso after four hijackers terrorized 63 passengers and crew for hours. The plane was refueled and later moved to safety as authorities negotiated and military and federal officers surrounded the aircraft. The incident spurred congressional reaction amid Cuba tensions and questions about the hijackers' identities, with some suggesting Cuban links and others noting American adventurers as possibilities.
July police reports show bonds and fines totaling 978, raising year to date to 4 757 as of Aug 1. Parking meter fines add 337 for a seven month total of 2 349 with 1 483 tickets issued last month. Police received 196 service calls, 25 more than June, 49 misdemeanor and one felony arrests, 8 intoxication charges, 3 driving while intoxicated, 17 traffic accidents, one injury. Traffic arrests include seven reckless driving, three speeding, and eight misc offenses including two for permitting minors to drive. Three extra speeding arrests occurred using a traffic timer. Patrol cars logged 8 000 miles and used 700 gallons of gas. Seventy four meals bought for prisoners and transients, totaling 350 meals for the year.
Lisa Schuh, 13, was removed from the critical list at St. John's hospital after a three hour brain operation following a July 23 attack in Joplin. Her parents, Mr and Mrs H Russell Schuh, stood by as doctors reported she tolerated nasal feeding and an ice blanket. The alleged abductor is jailed on rape charges.
Vera Jean Whitner a 14 year old non swimmer drowned Wednesday in a farm pond near Coffeyville Kansas when she stepped into a deep hole while wading with two boys. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs John Whitner who resided on a rural route south of Coffeyville at the William Eden farm pond 72 miles north of the city.
Three month old Gayle McWilliams died when a car and a pickup collided on U S 69 just north of Louisburg. Driver Mrs. Harold McWilliams, 31, and grandmother Mrs. Elsia McWilliams were injured and taken to KU Medical Center alongside James R. Grand, 53, of Louisburg, who turned left onto a country road.
Fire Chief C. W. Brennan reports a minor blaze last night at Mid west Office Supply 5 W. Main caused by a short in a neon sign and its transformer inside the building. The fire sparked a nearby wood display and was attributed to rain triggering the electrical fault.
A 12 year old girl, Christina Mae Gates, died in Parkville Missouri from blood poisoning after a nail pierced her left foot while she played barefoot near her father Paul Gates building a fence. She was treated by a doctor Monday and Tuesday and died en route for another visit.
Divers located the tourist bus that plunged from a rain slick road into Lake Lucerne killing 16 of 35 American passengers. Fifteen bodies were recovered, with 19 survivors treated. Survivors described the sudden disaster as rapid and terrifying.
President Kennedy approved a plan to spend an additional 3.5 billion dollars on missiles ships and planes as part of a broader defense package. The Senate prepared to consider an expanded 47 billion dollar defense bill with broad bipartisan support and rapid passage followed by the president signing within 24 hours of its House approval.
The Merle Evans room, featuring a miniature circus lot, was dedicated at the Columbus home of Mr. and Mrs. Ned Aitchison. Evans, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey bandmaster and Columbus native, sent a letter from Bozeman Montana due to circus duties. The dedication occurred during the Circus Historical Society annual meeting opening in Joplin Missouri.
Kansas tax collections totaled 15,104,264 in July, up 6.20 percent from a year earlier. Sales taxes reached 6,093,971, fuel taxes 5,328,247, corporate income 530,618, and individual income 244,066, with corporate and individual incomes down from July 1960.
