Harry Newland said he bought the clock’s works about five years ago and later traded the mechanism for a gun. The engraved plate says the clock was timed March 1, 1888 at Seth Thomas Clock Works Thomaston Connecticut. The mechanism weighed 443 pounds the pendulum 85 pounds and the weights 150 pounds.
Neosho county will delay the second round of polio shots for first and second grade children until after school reopens. County health officer Dr J D Gough cited limited vaccine supply and logistical ease, noting vaccine on hand covers about 400 children with more expected later to reach more youngsters after school starts.
In Lenexa Kansas two year old James Schlagel was left with four siblings under ten near a stock watering tank. He was found in about 18 inches of water after roughly 30 minutes. Firemen and deputies worked over an hour with a resuscitator before he died.
Return journey to Hong Kong border failed to free 11 U S airmen as scheduled. Next Canton train due 1 30 p m Hong Kong time. Airmen to go to Kai Tak for Philippine stay then flight to West Coast for reunion. They will undergo medical checks and processing at Clark Field Manila.
Lester T Sunderland, longtime Ash Grove Lime and Portland Cement Co. official, aged 87, died at 2 15 a m in Kansas City after a long illness. He led Ash Grove as president from 1913 to 1946 and later served as chairman. Born October 24 1867 in Vinton Iowa he built a national reputation for safety, health, and charitable giving. He leaves wife Sara P Sunderland three sons Elmer J Paul and Allan B Sunderland four grandchildren four great grandchildren a brother and a half sister. Funeral at 2 pm Friday at Stine McClure chapel Kansas City.
In Little Rock three men were detained without charges after a rifle attack Monday night on Capitol Transit Co property. About 10 p.m. shots hit two 15,000 gallon fuel tanks under guard. Prosecutor Frank Holt said Clarence Simpson 19 and Clarence Lee Smith 31 signed statements implicating themselves in planning the shooting, while George Royce 26 would not reveal details, with Simpson and Smith blaming Royce.
A series of mild earthquakes rattled near the Continental Divide in southwestern Colorado. Residents of Creede, a historic mining town now a vacation resort, reported tremors strong enough to awaken many locals.
Cisco Grove California AP report: 20 year old Mrs Al Ford Fine, once married at 17 to A C Daniel Schmidt, now living with a new husband and a two year old son, learns Schmidt, missing 37 months, will be released by Chinese authorities. She plans to meet him upon his return and must decide whether to reunite.
Power failed in part of Kansas City's business district this morning as Muehlbach and Continental hotels and the Professional and Rialto buildings lost electric service for eight minutes. Kansas City Power and Light Co blamed short circuits in two underground cables for the outage.
A twenty month old, Sandra Kay Shropshire, wandered onto a railroad track as a freight train approached. The locomotive and six cars passed over her. she suffered a brain concussion and cuts and bruises but was not struck by the wheels. She was listed in good condition at a hospital.
Flash floods struck North Albuquerque for the second time in two weeks causing evacuations and train disruption. Waters from two arroyos cut 20 feet of Santa Fe track halting trains. No injuries reported. National Guard deployed to evacuate families as waters receded leaving few residents.

Electric power was cut off in Topeka for 40 minutes yesterday due to a transformer failure at the Kansas Power and Light Co Tecumseh plant east of the city. The outage occurred at 2 40 p m. Mr and Mrs Adolf Brown of rural Thayer were visitors here today.

In San Antonio a 50-man jail riot at Bexar County Jail ended with the death of Rodolfo Escobedo as Sheriff Owen Kilday claimed self defense after firing a fatal shot when Escobedo brandished a large tray. Four others were injured as about 40 shots were fired during the incident.
In Long Beach California a four year old boy named Larry Spangler caused a scene with his toy if a headlike object. Firefighters were called when he could not remove it from his clothing. They bent the object back into place and the child’s head injury was avoided.
State Accident Records Section lists traffic fatalities in the last 24 hours and year to date for 1955 and 1954. For 1955 the totals are 308 fatalities to date, compared with 310 in the same period of 1954.
Wichita Beacon reports two State Board of Health officials, Dr G M Martin and William M Busch, are reviewing a black market baby investigation by reporter Mary Grice. Busch says the board may file a complaint if charges hold and will study files before action. Sedgwick County Atty Warner Moore will meet Busch. Grice’s ongoing series features a woman posing as an unwed mother to illustrate possible illegal placements and unlicensed maternity homes.
The 1956 county budget calls for expenses of 1,558,779.90, up 5,882.31 from 1955. Total tax levy rises to 28.69 per thousand, a two cent increase from 28.67. Public hearing set for 10:30 a.m. August 15 in Erie, after which the commission seeks approval to exceed budget limits by 25 percent.
Three polio cases or suspected cases are in the area. Chanute children Dennis Reese 12 and Nancy Allison 3 are hospitalized at University of Kansas Medical Center. Dennis fell ill July 20 in Pittsburg and Nancy was brought to Kansas City yesterday. Robert Larson Jr., 28 of Lavonburg, was also taken to KU Medical Center with suspected polio.
The first annual premium list of the Neosho County Fair Association was mailed to advertisers. The booklet covers award lists for the fair opening August 30 through September 2, includes exhibit rules, program details, fair board members, and lists of department judges and superintendents.
Graham H. Craig Graham a Chanute businessman was reported slightly improved today at Neosho Memorial Hospital. Doctors say his condition remains serious and stable with careful observation by the attending physician.
