Pasadena scientists reviewing Ranger 7 photographs conclude manned moon landings are feasible with current spaceship design. Ten of 4316 images show cratered seas, dust layers a foot deep, and a hard underlying layer capable of supporting a landing craft and likely a manned mission.
A 34 year old Chanute man William Henry Sumner shot himself in a clothes closet at his home while officers tried to talk him into surrendering the rifle. He died at Neosho Memorial Hospital after the 2 pm discharge. Sumner, born January 25 1930, was a mechanic at A and A Automotive and survived by his wife Mildred Ostrander two sons a stepson two stepdaughters his mother and siblings. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.

Cape Kennedy Florida AP reports two Mars fly by probes will launch in a 28 day window starting late October. The missions, unmanned, will photograph Mars and travel about eight months to reach the planet as prime alignment occurs only every two years. Michael A. Learned, 18, of Wichita, an instructor at a Wichita skating rink, was killed in a U S 50 crash three miles east of Waverly while driving to Kansas City.

Allen William Thornock, 42, was found dead in his segregation cell at the State Penitentiary in Lansing Kansas. Warden Sherman Crouse said the cause is not yet determined. The sheriff and Kansas Bureau of Investigation are handling the inquiry. Thornock, serving a one to five year sentence for grand larceny from Saline County, had prior prison terms in Kansas Washington and Utah. Three other inmates were in the cell.
