The senior high home economics kitchen is being upgraded with a new tile floor ahead of the installation of modern kitchen units by a Topeka firm. Tile covers corridors outside the home economics room and outside the superintendent’s office. New desks and a recovered counter were placed in the superintendent’s outer office. A kitten seen near Elm and Evergreen prompts a plea to help if found. A 5500 kilowatt peak load and a 4500 Sunday use record were reported at the city electric plant by plant superintendent Fred Mosier. Sergeant Armand Smith, Chanute alumnus now at Fort Benjamin Harrison, drums with the 35th Army band and toured Chicago TV. he spent 18 months in Korea with Special Services and recently visited family in the area.

Lard spill causes slick street in Lexington heat
A 50 pound can of lard fell from a passing truck at a busy Lexington intersection. Ninety degree heat caused slippery conditions as firemen hosed down the roadway and crews sanded the area to restore safe conditions.
Fuel Delivered To Jet Plant In Kansas City Strike
Pickets stayed aside as a trainload of fuel entered the Westinghouse jet engine plant in south Kansas City amid a seven week strike. Two Traffic Accidents Reported by Police
Two non injury motor vehicle accidents were investigated by police overnight. A Tahor Motor Company car at 15 N Evergreen was struck by a truck trailer when the truck turned from Elm to Evergreen, damaging rear bumper and front wheels. The truck and trailer were undamaged. A second collision at 23 N Grant involved a backing car owned by Vyrl Roberts of rural Erie and a car driven by James H Wade of 1021 N Grant, with damage to the right front of Wade’s car.

Motor Car Crash Injures Don Whitworth Near Chanute
Don Whitworth age 25 of Wichita suffered a neck fracture when his car left US 169 north of Chanute and struck a telephone pole at about 12:20 a.m. The Wichita car rental vehicle was demolished after traveling 150 feet. Whitworth was taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital. Sheriff Lee Montgomery investigated the mishap.

Peace Break In Mine Strike Reaches New Contract
Douglas Arizona Phelps Dodge Corp and the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers reached a new contract after a month long strike affecting 35,000 workers at Phelps Dodge Kennecott Copper and International Smelting and Refining. Wage increases of 11 to 17 1/2 cents per hour and expanded health and welfare benefits are included. Wages rise from 13.12 to 19.04 a day to 14.04 to 20.44. The agreement runs to July 1 1956 and the health plan was the major sticking point.
