Reunion in Dayton Reunites WWII POWs and Former Guards
Mr and Mrs Bernard Smith of 806 S Grant attended the 20th reunion of allied prisoners held at Stalag Luft II in World War II. About 550 guests, including many former German guards brought by Maj Gen Delmar T Spivey, shared memories. Smith, a former prisoner for 18 months, met several men and some guards who spoke of their lives since. He noted guards were pleased to be present and one sergeant now crafts hotel furniture. The Smiths flew to Dayton after a Kansas City drive and returned home last night.

Two Mattoon Men Linked to Jewel Burglary Case

105 Hardy Safari Campers In 28 Units Hold Campout
About 105 campers from Chanute and nearby towns gathered at Lake Farlington for a two day outdoor campout organized by the Chanute Safari club. They set up 28 units, shared a group supper, elected officers, and adopted a Safari Museum seal. Weather turned stormy at night but attendees stayed dry and some held Sunday School for about 30 children in cool 48 degree weather. The next Chanute Safari campout is planned at Santa Fe Park before Memorial Day.

Driver Uninjured In One Car Accident North Of Elks Lake

Youth Sniper Kills Two Then Ends Own Life on U S 101
In Santa Maria California a 16 year old boy fired on passing cars from a grassy hillside along U S 101 killing two bystanders Charles Hogan 21 of San Luis Obispo and Joel Kocab 28 of Los Angeles and wounding several others before a 50 yard range gun battle prompted him to shoot himself between the eyes. Authorities say Forrest and Joyce Clark of Long Beach reported their son ran away Saturday night taking the family rifle.

Junction City Blast Fatal at Gerald's Jewelry Store
AP reports a fatal blast and fire at Gerald's Jewelry Store on Main Street Junction City Kansas. The owner Harry Drabkin was found dead in the rubble after the 3:55 am explosion. Police have not yet determined a cause and neighboring apartments occupants escaped unharmed.
