Fire alarm recall reveals horses left their post and wandered to corn fodder as firefighters responded to Wilson Barnes meat market blaze. Two city firemen later amputated a robin’s trapped leg after rescuers freed it from string in a tree.
The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis annual meeting for members will be held in Neosho County on May 15. Homer F. Davis eastern Kansas representative Topeka announced the event. Mrs. D. A. Finney county chairman will lead arrangements and a reorganization of the county executive committee is planned.
Nineteen Neosho County farmers and businessmen toured the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation at Ardmore Oklahoma for three days. They learned crop and forage results including oats silage values, steer weight gains from different silages, and promising tests on oats varieties vetch and alfalfa. They toured three research farms and attended a barbecue with fishing at 15 private lakes.
Manuel Martinez Jr. 19 of 1007 N Lincoln dies at Neosho Memorial Hospital after a one car accident on U S Highway 169 near Earlton around midnight April 17. Also killed were Frank Jerod Leon 24 of Mound Valley. Albert Pilkington 22 of rural Mound Valley is in critical condition. other occupants Ray Bonilla 20 escaped injury and Chalen Waller 23 released after head injury. Martinez born Chanute Aug 2 1936 and employed as tractor driver for Byers Rock Crusher. He attended Bible Baptist church. Surviving family includes parents Mr and Mrs Manuel Martinez grandfather Gerrudes Martinez three brothers Ishmael Reuben Samuel and three sisters Ruth Vera Raul. Special service 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Wilson-Johnson chapel. Funeral arrangements incomplete.
Senior High School opens entries for the annual state music festival to be held Saturday at Emporia State College. Kenneth Tebow says the girls vocal sextet the madrigal singers and Judi Greathouse qualified with a top rating at the district Pittsburg contest held April 6 and 7. About 2000 competitors are expected.
The Erie Board of Equalization, comprising county commissioners, will convene at the courthouse from May 21 to 31 to adjust assessment valuations. County Clerk Wendell Bowyer notes taxpayers now receive valuation cards this year, and future cards will be sent only if real property valuations change.
A committee to select a tentative construction site for a new consolidated school was formed by Wilson and Woodson county districts. Sorghum Valley district voted 16 to 13 to join the consolidation. Curtis Carlson chairs the site committee with members from old Shirly, 99 district, Buffalo, Blue, Peach Grove, Mound Springs, Golden Ridge, and Woodson county. A further member will represent Sorghum Valley. Recommendations go to a general vote. Benedict district patrons may petition to join with state Education Department approval.
The Associated Press reports at least 28 people died in fires across North America over two days, including seven children burned in a Michigan home near Sylvania, and multiple fatalities in Philadelphia Corner Brook Nil, New York City tenement blaze and a Warren hotel fire with guests missing.
In Sacramento a .303 caliber rifle discharged accidentally as William H. Miller cleaned it. A bullet entered just above his right eye. He walked half a block for help. Doctors reported no brain damage and Miller was in satisfactory condition.
Weather forecast from Topeka reports mild conditions continuing through Friday with increasing clouds and scattered showers and thunderstorms in eastern portions. Overnight lows mainly 50s to 60s, highs in the 70s, with western readings 60s to 65 and top temperatures from Chanute to Concordia ranging 64 to 79.
Local meeting sponsored by the United States Weather Bureau in Erie outlined steps to form a county tornado warning network led by Lee Montgomery. The plan covers Neosho County with volunteers from multiple communities and calls for each town to set up its own system to notify the sheriff’s office for rebroadcast warnings.
Eight Air Force crew members perished when a KC97 tanker from Forbes Air Force Base Topeka crashed and exploded on the Frank Forhn farm near Woodbine Kansas about 25 miles east of Abilene. The plane was in trouble with witnesses reporting an engine fire. Names of the dead include Capt Edward Shipka S Sgt Kenneth E Van Patten A2C Juri Eric Jonnas S Sgt Donald S Del Priore 2nd Lt Reginald O Wilkie Jr Capt William J Brennan 2nd Lt Robert Bennett S Sgt William L Fritts with Forbes stating the crew list.
The 8 year old Johnny Dyal son of Mr and Mrs John Dyal of Topeka was killed when struck by a car at a street intersection. The driver is 77 year old Myra Moore Hardy of Topeka. It is Topeka’s third traffic fatality this year and the second in 24 hours.
Leonard Poole 67 an undertaker from Buffalo was treated at Neosho Memorial Hospital for shotgun wounds to an arm and abdomen. He was brought in yesterday around 1 15 p m police said he had been in ill health and the doctor reported his condition was not critical.
In Laguna Beach California a boy named Mark Edwards aged 2 fell ten feet from a near perpendicular cliff onto a narrow ledge above the rocky surf. His grandmother Mrs Alfred Bauer paused to admire flowers as he clung still and a crowd, park staff, police and an ambulance arrived. If he had moved six inches he could have fallen a hundred feet. The grandmother kept urging him to stay still while rescuers worked.
State Accident Records lists 1956 totals with 176 fatalities in the same period 1955 showing 152. Police lowered a man to the ground as two were pulled up. Tribune delivery advisory urges readers to call their carrier or 700 after 6 p.m. for access.

Washington House leaders foresee passage of the Democratic highway bill by a large margin with most Republicans supporting it. The plan would spend 51.2 billion over 13 years for a 40 000 mile interstate system, financed largely by federal funding and a 14.8 billion tax increase, including a penny rise in the gasoline tax. Debates and floor fights are expected before any final vote.
Paul J. Neff president of the Missouri Pacific Railroad announced readiness to start a $10 million double dump yard project in Kansas City. The yard would be the largest on the 10,000 mile system with 78 tracks and room for 15,000 freight cars, contingent on the fate of a trafficway.
In Washington the House Democrats unveiled a plan to pay direct subsidies to farmers to keep crops at about 90 percent parity. Republicans dismissed it as a glorified Brannan plan and expected defeat. In Kansas City Dr. Robert M. Oklahoma City OHP says ten radar patrol cars caught 1 397 speeders in the first three months. Chief Jack Rollins said the patrol arrested 4 993 motorists for speeding and driving without a license last month.
Five year old William Meuller died of starvation. his father Alfred Meuller 60 and mother 24 were held on charges of failure to provide. Police say the boy died after long confinement in a locked room and the body was placed in a weighted burlap sack and dumped in the Delaware River. Coroner Kametz reports no marks of violence and malnutrition as cause of death.
A truckload of electric fans valued at $8,000 was stolen from a loading dock in Chicago. Police seek suspects and urge witnesses to come forward with information.
