Nuclear Test First Shot Fired in Pacific Series
The Atomic Energy Commission announced the United States fired the first shot of its nuclear test series in the Pacific around 10:45 a.m. EST near Christmas Island. The intermediate yield device was dropped from an airplane as President Kennedy had given go ahead after efforts to secure a reliable test ban. State Department officials said the U.S. would proceed regardless and noted Japanese Ambassador Asakai visited the department.

Airplanes will converge on Chanute from four states for the 17th annual Kansas Flying Farmers convention. Charles Sessler says about 90 registrants have signed in with 125 expected. Chanute Student Among KU NSF Research Scholars
Craig Berry, Chanute Junior College graduate, is one of 13 Kansas University pharmacy students named undergraduate National Science Foundation research scholars for 1962 63. Each receives 750 dollars for two semesters and ten weeks of summer research under faculty in pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacology. Berry, son of Mr and Mrs Charles L Berry of 321 S Garfield, is a third year student working in pharmacology. The appointments are funded by a 15640 dollar grant to the School of Pharmacy.

City buys new police car at low bid
Merle Kelly Ford won the letting with a 1 049 bid plus trade in for a Fairlane V-8 police car. City Manager R J Hayes noted the bid meets specifications and a 1960 Chevrolet is traded in. Other bids were 1 239 1 245 and 1 535. Hayes will use the car for administrative purposes before cruiser duty.
