R J Hayes will drive to Lawrence for the opening of the annual city managers school at the University of Kansas with sessions running through Friday. He notes past schools included wives activities now discontinued and that Mrs Hayes will stay home.
The city commission signaled willingness to issue revenue bonds to finance a new industrial building. This policy statement, not a firm commitment, allows bond plans without a voter vote under a new state law. A local prospect eyed by managers may favor Chanute Pittsburg or Parsons as locations, with ownership transferring after bond repayment.
In Topeka Kansas officials discuss traffic death logs and street alley alignment issues. The city grants street department employee Lewis Stowell permission to work beyond age 65 under annual review. Foodtown applies for a package beer license and W J Althaber is named acting mayor in absence of Mayor John Lapham. Arkansas River Basin Development Assn membership approved, non voting associate to keep officials informed. Police report a theft of about 400 to 500 dollars from St Patrick's Catholic church parish priests residence where Easter mass collection was left unattended between 8 30 and 8 50 am. The sum included three fund offerings and loose cash estimated 40 to 50 dollars. Investigation ongoing.
A 1953 Ford tractor owned by S. C. Hudson of R. 1 suffered extensive damage after a gasoline spill overflowed during fueling at about 7:20 a.m. today. Firemen said the liquid gasoline ignited when the engine was started.

About 800 Jehovah's Witnesses are expected for a three day ministry training seminar from May 4 to 6 at Memorial auditorium. The Watchtower Society sponsors the convention with representatives from 17 congregations in southwestern Missouri and southeastern Kansas. Leo Lambert presides. speakers include A C Manera Jr from Brooklyn and Harley R Harris.
In Kansas interest in three sex education pamphlets rises after a Fort Scott protest. Dr. Evalyn Gendel says no orders since January then eight counties placed new orders and three reordered. Pamphlets approved last October for supervised use. 3,000 copies sent, 3,000 more ordered. Jointly published by the National Education Association and American Medical Association. No petitions from Fort Scott to the state superintendent.
The Kansas Turnpike Authority said it will save 28000 dollars in three years by revising its insurance coverage.
The Ranger 4 mooncraft, 730 pounds, tumbles toward the moon after failed efforts to awaken it from coma. It will skim the leading edge at about 900 miles, then crash on the moon’s hidden backside around 8:55 a.m. EST. NASA notes probable impact with possible minor final capture if it misses.
Nine of the Santa Fe freight train's sixty five cars derailed on the west ledge of Great Bend Kansas on Monday. None of the five crew members were injured and none of the five cattle cars reported injuries.
Dale Dalton a 7 year old boy from 301 S Malcolm suffered a bruised right knee but no serious injury when his bicycle struck a car about 12 30 p m yesterday The accident occurred on 4th between Central and Malcolm near St Patrick s school grounds The bicycle came from a driveway and hit the right rear of a 1958 Chevrolet driven by Marie Neely 43 of 1419 Edith Street
Three college explorers aged 19 to 21 spent 36 hours trapped in Lookout Mountain cave near Trenton Georgia with only a four foot trench for warmth. Emory University student James Mason and Martin Huddleston joined Bill Bartee of Presbyterian College in surviving by rope and mud until rescuers arrived.
Lawrence Kansas AP report describes Har old Sodders of Kansas City Kansas and his son Richard 8 driving to Topeka while Mrs Sodders and son Charles 7 followed. East of Lawrence the car rolled four times killing Charles. Sodders later learned of the wreck from truckers and patrolmen explain the cause as an edged off pavement and a quick correction.
The forecast calls for continued fair, warmer weather in Kansas with highs in the middle 80s tomorrow. Today’s temperatures range from the 70s in western areas to upper 70s in central locations, with early lows around the upper 30s to low 50s. Winds remain south and southwest at moderate speeds.
John W. Hovorka joined The Tribune yesterday as advertising manager replacing Jim Sheridan who held the post for seven years. Hovorka from Emporia attended Creighton University and Kansas University served as a 1st lieutenant in the U S Army Reserve and worked at Salina Journal and Hutchinson News before. He and his wife June and son Joseph John II reside at 910 S Larson Chanute. Sheridan left to become NAMCO district account executive based in Green Bay Wis with plans to stay in Chanute.
Congressman Walter McVey of the 3rd District toured Chanute visiting friends as he continues a tour of the new Fifth District. He noted the House is on Easter recess.
