UNESCO Dinner Welcomes 250 at Hutton School
About 250 attendees at the UNESCO covered dish dinner at Hutton School honored 25 foreign students from area colleges. Achim Schrader of Germany spoke on UNESCO work and dismissed stereotypes, praising personal交流 and cross cultural exchange. Guests represented KU KSU Parsons JCC Coffeyville and numerous international students from Iran Jordan Sweden Japan Austria Finland Indonesia Mexico Thailand and China.

Drowns at Fall River Bill Mendenhall in 36th year
William W. Mendenhall operator of Steele's Court Chanute died in a diving accident at Fall River reservoir about 9 PM. He was 36. With three Chanute men on a fishing trip their boat’s propeller pin sheared and Mendenhall fell overboard while moving to the opposite end. He was recovered at 9:15 AM in 8 feet of water. Greenwood County authorities investigated. Survived by widow Virginia Overby Mendenhall three daughters and three step-daughters, parents Mr. and Mrs. Oval Mendenhall, a sister and a brother. Funeral arrangements are pending Johnson Mortuary in charge.

Mr and Mrs C M Gough of Erie R 2 were traveling from a Los Angeles visit when their car caught fire about 180 miles west of Wichita. They were unaware until other motorists warned them. Mrs Gough, an invalid, was carried to safety as the vehicle, luggage, tools and her wheelchair burned. Helpers drove them to Wichita where they spent the night with a nephew Harold McPeak before continuing home.

Miss Rains Hurt In Car Accident Near Petrolia
Miss Sheila Rains of 307 S Western sustained a chin cut and shock when the car she rode in struck a culvert near Petrolia around 1 a.m. Passenger Bob Brundage of 308 N Steuben blamed reaching for a dropped cigarette. Girard Man Killed When Car Falls
Rudy Polchlopek 37 was killed when a car slipped off a jack while he worked beneath it on his farm near Girard. His wife and her mother found him and jacked the car up, then drove a mile to summon an ambulance, but he died at a Pittsburg hospital.
