High Winds Strike Chanute Causing Plant Damage and Damage Outside
Strong winds up to 75 mph struck the Chanute area Saturday evening. The Chanute Water Plant near the Neosho River suffered major roof loss, with tin sections torn loose. The plant’s electric lines were briefly knocked out and repairs completed by 9:50 p.m. No major Chanute damage beyond the plant was reported, though outlying farms and signs were damaged. The Neosho River rose to 11.6 feet before receding.

Fredonia Bank Robbery Suspects Nabbed by FBI
Two Wichita men Richard Marvin Bowme 25 and Carlos Coffman 27 were arrested by the FBI in connection with the February 12 Fredonia State Bank holdup. Investigators traced a stolen station wagon and a pair of glasses to identify the suspects and the getaway car. The raid and arrests followed a quick noon robbery in which teller Clay Nagle filled a bag with cash.

Rock Ledge Topples Kills Russell Youth While Fishing
In Russell Kas a limestone ledge toppled onto 16 year old Terry Fink killing him as he fished at the city lake a mile south of Russell. His companion Bob Lolley 14 narrowly escaped injury and ran for help after the rock slid onto the boy. A winch truck was used to lift the slab off the victim.

In Centerburg Ohio six people died in a head-on collision involving the Emory Blevins family and Marie and Frances Salyer. Drivers were Emory Blevins 30 of Mansfield and Marie Salyer 24 of Centerburg. Frances Salyer 20 also of Centerburg died along with Blevins wife Hilda 24 and their children Danny 6 and Jackie 5.
