Topeka AP John O Leary state bank commissioner says 17 of 423 Kansas state banks have not insured deposits with FDIC under a 1959 law. Banks must obtain FDIC insurance or fidelity bonds by November 1. All but one of the 17 plan to secure FDIC coverage. the remaining bank plans liquidation.
A Kansas district judge began hearings in the ouster case against Lyons police chief L H Ankerholz. The suit, filed February 18 by Attorney General John Anderson, accuses him of involvement in reducing drunken driving charges or failing to file them. The judge had ordered Ankerholz suspended on February 24 pending the ouster review.
