Neighbors plan a 7:30 p.m. Saturday gift shower at Zillah School east of Humboldt for E. A. Criswell and family after their farm home was burned last Friday. The blaze woke Criswell as he slept, he escaped but lost all belongings and papers. only the building was insured. the Criswells have three children living away.

Governor commutes Bobby Spencer death sentence to life
Gov. George Docking commuted the death sentence of Bobby Spencer to life imprisonment for the bludgeon and knife slaying of Ruby S. Blanton in Wyandotte County. Spencer had been scheduled to hang May 25. Pardon attorney Dale Spiegel announced the clemency saying the death penalty is no deterrent to crime.

District court jurors acquitted Charles Doudna of manslaughter in the fatal Halloween shooting of 16 year old Jim McCune at Central Park. The 39 year old city employee testified the .22 pistol he carried discharged accidentally when he stumbled over a retaining wall. The jury reached not guilty verdict after about an hour of deliberation with foreman H V Stevenson.
