Firemen aid woman lockout and Dalmatian joins Easter hunt

Firemen helped Mrs Edna Strohm regain entry to her home after being locked out using a second floor window. Regina the polka dot Dalmatian, owned by Fire Chief Brennan, joined an Easter egg hunt across the street and returned with candy eggs. A stroller across the street dropped clothing from a trailer, later turned to police. Don Wells reports on the Ptasznik family, Polish refugees who arrived in New York, moved west, and now own a home with four lots to grow a garden and raise their four children in Erie.

West Virginia Mishap Fatal to a Kansan

A Kansas man was among four killed in a collision on U S Route 50 about 25 miles east of Grafton West Virginia with five others injured. State Police noted the cars were welded together by the impact and a tow truck had to pry them apart Vernon Benton 51 Osage City Kansas driver of a westbound 1955 sedan died. his wife was critically injured.

Flying Platform Tested by Pilot in Palo Alto

A test pilot says the wingless flying platform developed by Hiller Helicopter for the Office of Naval Research can be flown by anyone who can walk. The device uses two counterrotating propellers and two ducted fans to generate lift, with control by leaning and throttle. Officials note further research is needed before military production.

Plans for TB Hospital Ground-Breaking Ceremonies

Chamber of Commerce discussion outlined plans for the ground breaking of the new State tuberculosis hospital on West Seventh. Gov. Fred Hall and Kansas federal lawmakers would be invited, with a reception at the site after the program. Carl Pate would chair a committee to organize the ceremonies and a date would be set after construction timing is confirmed.

Tom Wright, 69, of Topeka, died Saturday night when his car veered off U S Highway 40 three miles east of Topeka and overturned.

Traffic Mishap Fatal To Kansas City Man

A car ran off a Wyandotte County rural road and crashed into a tree killing Robert Pennington 27 of Kansas City. Injured were William E. Schmidt 29 and William B. Bernard 23, both from Kansas City. It marked the county’s fifth traffic death of 1955.

Police officer found dead atop building in Topeka

Clarence L. Shields 32 year police veteran and father of two was shot dead atop the Moose Lodge building during a routine check. Curtis Gene Shoop 23 is under guard at Stormont Hospital with a bullet wound and is questioned in the shooting. Another man is being sought for questioning as officers probe burglaries at the lodge, allegedly entered via air vent.

Showers Predicted Across Kansas With Cooler Tuesday

The forecast calls for occasional showers or thundershowers tonight and Thursday with a cooler Tuesday. Overnight lows vary from the 20s in the northwest to the 50s in the southeast, and highs from the 50s to the 60s across the state. Youth Killed in Mishap Near Belleville

Paul Newton Allen aged 23 from Jamestown died when his car hit a bridge railing on U S 8 1 near Belleville six miles north of town. Emergency crews responded to the morning crash. The accident remains under investigation by local authorities.

Easter Services Draw Huge Crowds Across Kansas

Easter Sunday attracted thousands as area churches held sunrise and morning masses. Over 500 attended the Santa Fe park and Neocha Drive-In services, with First Methodist and First Baptist each reporting 500 plus attendees. Court Bill Lets Neosho Court Sit in Erie and Chanute

A bill making sessions of the Neosho county District Court to be held in Erie and Chanute became law on publication. The act requires a District Court clerk to maintain offices in both cities and grants Chanute rooms in the Memorial building for court use at no county cost. Court terms for the seventh district are set for Fredonia in Wilson county in January April September. Erie in Neosho in February May. Chanute in October.

Joplin Plant Struck by 1000 Workers Over Wages

About 1,000 production workers walked out at the Vickers Inc plant in Joplin Missouri. The AFL United Auto Workers Local No 200 called the strike after wage talks broke down Friday night. Vickers offered a three to seven cent raise across six classifications, a final offer the union rejected seeking a one cent across the board increase. Both sides expected a prolonged dispute.
