Israel said it shot down six Syrian MIG21s with no losses, but one Israeli was killed and another wounded on the ground. Syria claimed five Israeli planes were shot down and at least 70 Israelis killed, four of its planes lost, with five dead and unspecified injuries. An Israeli envoy notified the UN Security Council president of ongoing aggression.
Intercepted letter hints the current Legislature may take up the Kansas City Tulsa Freeway plan within the US 169 corridor if session length allows.
Cars driven by Robert E. Orr age 18 of 418 North Highland and Michael L. Roberts age 16 of 302 South Central were badly damaged in an intersection collision at Main and Lincoln about 5 40 p m yesterday. Officers noted the Orr 1965 Chevrolet front end and the Roberts 1961 Chevrolet right side were extensively damaged. Police and highway patrol are investigating a wrecked 1958 Plymouth abandoned on North Plummer Road one mile north of Highway K39 after it left the road struck a telephone pole buried two ditches and hit a log.
Pete Brown of Chanute was held in the city jail on intoxication and peace disturbance charges with more expected. Police say Brown struck John Clines after being expelled from the West Main Cafe, breaking Clines jaw. Clines received treatment at a Topeka hospital.
Kansas traffic death log shows 24 hours ending 9 a.m. Saturday for April 10 1967 with 117 deaths this period versus 153 in the comparable 196 period.
Buffalo man Joe W. Osborne 61 died in a head on collision three and a half miles west of town yesterday afternoon about 2 30 PM. The other driver Terry L. Johnson 19 of Fredonia was seriously injured and taken to a Wichita hospital. Johnson is a NCC JC student returning from Chanute. Johnson had a broken leg and possible internal injuries. Trooper Walt Wiltse investigated the crash at the county road crest where the cars met.
The Kansas Supreme Court upheld the conviction and death sentence of William Frederick Zimmer for abducting and killing 7 year old Gladys Cora Johnson in Topeka. Johnson was taken from a Topeka street corner on November 14, 1964, and found later in a rural area near St. Marys, Kansas.
AP reports 19 year old Jack Spangler of Kansas City died early today in a two car crash at Gregory and Elmwood. No injuries reported in the other vehicle.
Washington reports a spreading rash of Teamster strikes prompting trucking employers to threaten locking out 250,000 drivers and halting 1,500 major firms. A vote on the lockout was expected soon as labor and management face a potential national transport crisis. Undersecretary Reynolds faced a six-union strike against 138 railroads next Wednesday risking a broader wage dispute affecting 585,000 transport workers.
TOPEKA AP Another highways plan adds five freeways to the Kansas program with a $300 million 30 year bond issue. Gov Docking and lawmakers discussed financing with no new revenue, estimating 3.5 to 3.75 percent interest. Bonds would start in 1970 with annual payments rising to nearly 17 million by 1975, funded by $50 million yearly from 1967 to 1975.
A South Korean Air Force C46 transport crashed into a dense Seoul slum near Yoido base killing 48 and injuring 30, including 13 high school students who fled from a nearby school. The plane carried Captain Suh Keun-joo and two crewmen among the dead, with 17 others seriously burned or hurt.
AP reports two drivers died in a head on collision on U S 81 north of Wichita. Charles Coleman 31 Newton and Steven Neil Harlan 21 Route 2 Sedgwick died in the crash. Patricia Meyer 27 Newton was treated for minor injuries. Coleman reportedly pulled off the highway to avoid impact as Harlan’s car struck his vehicle.
Neal Malicky of Drew University told Southwestern College’s model United Nations program that the cry for food could spark world conflict. He said war is not a solution to 20th century disputes as the event concludes.
The Chestnut liquor store at 1112 N Santa Fe was broken into during the night and an undetermined amount of liquor stolen. A plate glass window beside the drive through to the south was broken, apparently by a rock, and the window was discovered and reported to police at 6 25 a m.
A man believed from Washington Kansas was killed when his car struck a bridge railing near Washington on US 36. The vehicle burned after impact and identification was not yet possible, with the victim in his late 50s to early 60s.
