Kansas House approves 5 dollar pupil aid increase in education push

In Topeka the House backed a plan to raise emergency aid per pupil from 15 to 20 and fund it with higher taxes on beer cigarettes and liquor. The move follows earlier Senate support and a caucus vote. Governor Anderson did not endorse the increase without offsetting revenue. The package would add about 2.4 million dollars annually.

Fort Scott Man Gets Area Post For Highways

Gov. John Anderson announced Ray Shepherd of Fort Scott as commissioner from Highway Division 4, replacing Jack Goodrich of Parsons. The move, seen by boosters as signaling a shift toward a southern route from Kansas City to the border, followed by another appointment, John Hineman of Dighton to Division 6.

Weather Outlook For Kansas Cooler With Light Rain Possible

Kansas experiences cloudy cool conditions with light rain in parts of the south. Forecast calls for becoming partly cloudy and colder tonight and a little warmer Thursday with mid 50s highs. Reports show Dodge City 0.12 inches, Goodland 28, Chanute 76 Tuesday, Wichita 44, and a chilly north wind.

Aid to Wichita University Signed by Gov Anderson

Gov John Anderson signed a bill providing about 178000 dollars annually in state financial aid to Wichita University. The action marks support for the university in state finances.

Fiery Death in Pratt Truck Car Crash Kills Four

Four people die in a head on collision two miles north of Pratt Kansas between a gasoline truck and a car. Victims include Ed Volger truck driver Grace Van Dyke Helen Campbell and Florence Campbell. High wind and loss of control cited as factors.

Police Court Bonds and Fines Report March Totals

Police court bonds and fines for March totaled 459, with 363 in parking fines. The three month total reached 1,032 in parking fines and 1,966 overall by April 1. Calls for service fell to 114. 28 misdemeanors and no felonies were arrests.

Chanute Receives Permit for Neosho Dam Construction

A Water Resources Board permit allows Chanute to build a six foot high dam on the Neosho at Brown Wells ford northeast of town. Approval relies on verbal OKs from the State Highway Commission and Santa Fe railroad due to easement needs. written confirmations to follow. Office Machines Recovered After Break-In at Chanute Plant

An electric calculator and a check protector stolen in a weekend break-in at Chanute Iron & Metal Co. 402 N Malcolm were recovered yesterday afternoon. Kenneth Washington an employee located the machines in a vacant house at 310 N Malcolm concealed under sofa cushions.

Wilson County Citizen Sold to John Relph

Joe Relph of Oklahoma City purchased the Wilson County Citizen, a paper started in 1870. John S. Gilmore Sr. ran it until 1913, then John S. Gilmore Jr. after 1913, and since 1948 the widow of Gilmore Jr. has published it and plans retirement. The buyer has 12 years in advertising sales in Oklahoma City.
