A pet skunk escaped and roamed a neighborhood in Bowling Green for hours in search of a mate. Owner Sherman England said the skunk was desented and police Sgt. L J Young corralled and returned it to its home.
Memphis AP. James Earl Ray, who pled guilty to killing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has certified Richard C. Ryan as his new lawyer. Judge Arthur C. Faquin Jr. was named to preside, replacing the late W. Preston Battle Jr. Ryan aims to obtain a new hearing, focusing on a letter Ray sent to Battle about seeking a new trial.
National Guard patrols pulled off Chicago streets after order was restored in Negro neighborhoods hit by looting and fighting. Police patrolled West Madison Street as curfew and bans on liquor and firearms were imposed. Mayor Daley and Gov. Ogilvie oversaw measures to maintain calm through the weekend. Weather notes include a tornadic watch for parts of Kansas and Missouri with potential severe storms later today.
Police Chief Dana Hummer says fire bombs destroyed six Topeka businesses causing nearly a quarter million dollars in damage. Two firefighters injured. no arrests yet. Chanute units of the 3rd Battalion 137th Infantry join 600 guardsmen from the state for precautionary exercises in Kansas City. C Company from Chanute, plus units from Fredonia Iola Pittsburg Yates Center Neodesha, total 89 guardsmen with five officers, arriving by 6 p.m. to train at the armory. The move follows the MLK Jr. anniversary riots in 100 cities but reports no incidents in Kansas City.
Thousands march in Memphis on the first anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. assassination. Observances spread nationwide as Rev. Ralph Abernathy leads services outside City Hall and Coretta King visits her husband’s grave. Chicago unrest and other cities report clashes, curfews, and arrests amid King memorial activities.

Israel and Egypt clashed across the Suez Canal using artillery tanks mortars and small arms for two hours before U N observers brokered a cease fire.
