The Tribune reports an observed moon halo or ring last Monday. FAA Flight Service chief Bur O Connor explains halos form from ice crystal refraction in cirrus clouds, signaling aviation weather and possible upcoming warm fronts and storm risk.
In Harrisonville Missouri on Missouri Highway 7, Winfred M. Williams 66 and Emma Grace Williams 64 of Pittsburg Kansas were killed in a headon collision Sunday. Other driver Donald Allen Hon 18 of Harrisonville suffered facial lacerations.
Fire at the Warwick wax plant on the south edge of Chanute damaged an oil tank and wax stills. Seven people were injured in a two-car crash on US 59 north of Erie. Fire Chief C W Brennan injured his back but continued work. The Ramseys and other motorists were treated or examined at local hospitals. An earlier guard-rail accident near Stark caused minor injuries.
Police investigated two minor traffic accidents Saturday and two more today. A 1961 Chevrolet belonging to Fisher Motor Co. driven by James L. Morris collided with a 190 Plymouth driven by Elmer L. Eisenbrandt at Main and Grant causing $50 and $20 damage respectively. Another backing collision near Island Evergreen involved a 1959 Chevrolet driven by W. A. Noltensmeyer and a 1960 Chevrolet driven by Walter L. Kinney with minor damage. A 4:30 p.m. Saturday crash at 27 W Main involved Dale E. Bailey and Nathan Welch Jr. with no injuries. Earlier, John K. Diamond and George Eaton collided on Main at the Santa Fe tracks causing $30 and $25 damage.

Hundreds of children and parents gathered at Highland Park for the Chanute Lions Club Easter egg scramble. The event divided into three age groups with three prize eggs in each area worth 3, 2, and 1, plus $20 in dimes hidden in some eggs. Winners included Nancy Gibson, Tamela Anderson, and Rosanna McGaugh in top divisions, with multiple other prize recipients across groups. The hunt concluded in a little over 15 minutes.
Voters in eight area towns decide contests for mayor police judge constable and council or school board positions. Thayer Humboldt Elsmore and Galesburg feature key races with challengers accusing incumbents of waste and calling for reforms. A new Thayer ticket led by A L Gregory seeks to unseat incumbents, while Humboldt lists multiple mayoral and council candidates and several open school board seats.
The General Assembly approved a stopgap Congo spending powers for Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold by a 51 to 10 vote with 22 abstentions, despite strong Soviet opposition. Mali and the Soviet bloc cast the no votes. A separate report says the U S cable ship Western Union was intercepted by a Cuban gunboat near Baracoa and later freed after U S jets and a destroyer intervened.
The Miss Chanute contest adds Linda Campbell to the four finalists with a midnight deadline for new entries tomorrow. Contest judging will be at the Memorial Building Saturday night with public admission and a three part evaluation.
Voters go to the polls tomorrow to select three city commissioners and three school board members, and to decide on extending the industrial levy. Incumbents Harold R. Williams W. J. Althaber John Lapham Tom Morehead oppose for regular terms. Dave Evans and Carl Tribble vie for the unexpired term. School board nominees are Floyd Naff Floyd Potter Paul Brennecke Don Abbuehl and Bob Ward. Polls open 8 am to 6 pm with single election boards and results tabulated after closing.
Harold Collins aged 14 died after a .22 rifle discharged while he and two other boys examined it. He died two hours later at a Topeka hospital. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Collins.
Three people died in Kansas traffic accidents over the Easter weekend. A fourth death may have been a heart attack before a car hit a utility pole in Wichita. Kenneth Weeks, 25, from Lubbock Texas, was killed near Winona when a vehicle overturned after missing a curve. Marion Miller, 36, from Dighton, was injured. Jimmie Joe Massingale, 16, from Kansas City, was injured fatally when a car left US 166 west of Arkansas City and overturned. Dallas Jennings, 17, near Arkansas City, and his brother Wendell 15, suffered minor injuries. Peter Kraft, Ellsworth, was killed in a one car crash near Ellsworth.
James Jennings Bryan 57 of Wichita died from internal injuries after a car crash on a Wichita street Saturday night. Coroner Robert Jones said autopsy results confirmed the cause. the driver’s heart attack was ruled not involved. The incident left another person hospitalized in critical condition.
In Saginaw Michigan Delores Johnson 30 loses five of seven children in an Easter house fire. Johnson escaped with two girls Diane and Darlene but neighbors stopped her from rescuing others. Victims include Debra 4 Donna Jean 9 Allen Dale 6 Andrew Darrell 4 and Jeffrey 3 months. Debra had earlier punishment by Johnson for playing with matches.
Appointive directors for the coming year were announced by the Chamber of Commerce. They are Ralph Ellis R J Hayes Sara Wilson and Glen McLaren. The new directors take office May 1 and a meeting April 12 will elect officers.
A squall line in Kansas and Missouri produced strong winds Sunday into Sunday night with gusts up to 55 mph in Topeka. Expect gradual clearing and cooler temperatures with readings climbing back into the 60s by Tuesday afternoon.
