The city council on June 21 approved a third reading of a restrictive fireworks ordinance within city limits for the Fourth of July. Merchants who stocked fireworks face losses as wholesale versus retail sale thresholds are unclear, potentially allowing large scale sales to out of town buyers.
Abe Flewelling asked the city council for an appropriation to run weekly band concerts in the park for the remainder of the summer. The application, presented late in the season, was referred to the finance committee.
The plot of maple View Addition southeast of town was presented to the city council and accepted last night. The property is laid out in lots for home building with reservations already made by buyers waiting for formal market status.
The contracting firm of Allred and James wins a contract to build three miles of state road from Hoquiam north as part of the Hoquiam to Montesano main highway. Work began last year and the completed road is planned to be among the best in the state with thorough grading and good drainage.
Two women named Mrs. Johnsons quarrelled after neighborly ties soured this morning. In court, one Mrs. Johnson charged the other while Mr Johnson tried to mediate, but the dispute persisted amid tense exchanges and a formal hearing.
The funeral for M. M. Reed, who drowned in Dryad, is this afternoon at Charles J. Sticklin's undertakers. The ceremony will be conducted by Stoht J. Reid. Floral tributes have arrived and deep sympathy is extended to the young widow.
The preliminary hearing for Henry C Courtcamp, charged with an outrageous assault on an eight year old Polish girl in Centralia last Friday, was postponed again. Officials fear public pressure. the information may be filed directly in Chehalis Superior Court. Courtcamp remains jailed as authorities decide venue and admissibility amid strong local interest.
A Washington Oregon Corporation plans converting five acres bought from the Somperville estate into a public park about four miles north of Chehalis. Residents of Chehalis and Centralia could benefit from a summer recreation site with concerts every Sunday and evening. Revenue from concessions and transport could repay the investment.
A large shingle mill owned by Chehalis River Lumber Company was destroyed by fire last night near the city. The plant, one of the best equipped in the region, cost about 75000 dollars to replace and will leave between one hundred fifty and men unemployed. The blaze started on a refuse pile and spread with a breeze, outpacing the workers who fought to save it. Insurance is expected to cover only a fraction of the loss.
William Springer, arrested in Montesano last week on alimony nonpayment, appeared in Chehatis Superior Court. Sheriff Urquhart filed the information after his wife swore to a warrant. Springer paid the due alimony and costs. Judge Rice released him on promise to continue payments.
Public Service Commission order grants Chehalis and Cowlitz Railroad Company permission to extend tracks across 21 streets in Chehalis Lewis County with planked between lines and two foot paths paved in the same material as city paving, to be ordered by the city at any future time.
On June 21 Thomas I Thackley filed a complaint with the city council about the insanitary conditions of a property on W Street. The matter reignited neighborhood health concerns and urged immediate action by the Health Officer. The complaint was referred to the city attorney and the health officer.
Centralia street lights will glow for a two day July celebration. The celebration committee requested illumination and the city council granted it along with concession proceeds to the committee. M. Ws. Clark was named a volunteer officer to collect license money for the committee.
A school corpus reports a population of 10 000, with a gain of fifteen percent since the last census. The current pupil count is 2 202, and the city now has more girls than boys in attendance. The last total school census was 1 920.
The Centralia census returns 2202, up 15 percent from 1910’s 1920. Ages five to twenty one. 1048 boys and 1154 girls attend school. Estimated city population around 10,000, reflecting typical schooling-based calculation and recent Census bureau figures.
From Australia comes information that the Urquhart family of Lewle County may receive a vast fortune from the estate of a deceased magnate. The Urquharts, long tied to Dingwell Scotland, include William, David, Henry, Noble, and Robert, all prominent in local affairs. The report notes the fortune could be several millions and hints at connections to the Wall Tmown and Scottish interests.
William Coleman of Doty admitted stealing several suits and baseball paraphernalia from South Bend State League players en route to Chehalis. Arrested in Doty, he was fined ten dollars plus costs. Stolen items were found hidden in a Doty saloon and returned to the team manager.
The city council let the sewer system contract for the south part of the city last night after six firms bid 8725.50 to 10000. Lister Construction Company won with the lowest bid and met other conditions. Work will start as supplies and details permit.
A group of new members were initiated into the Eagles at the first Monday meeting. Notable among them were L. G. Wilson W. J. Black Tid Beines William Beines and Joseph Wrieslen. A striking moment was the father and son both joining that night William Brines and his son Edward Drines. Refreshments and jokes followed the ceremony.
A marriage license was applied for in Chehalis for Wyle M. Dyer and Rosella M. Olson of Little Falls. Verda Scott of Elma and C. G. Mannes of Minneapolis wed June 18 at 10 40 am, with Rev. McCollough officiating and a reception at the bride's parents.
John Riseland, state fish commissioner, reports county game funds for April 1 1909 and 1910, noting Lewis County had 2388.74 on hand in 1909 and 1526.40 in 1910. The Lewis County license total over 1909–1910 era reached 2626, with other counties spending on Hungarian partridges pheasants and fish. Miss Hertha Smith and friends visited Chehalis on Sunday.
The Dyskow residence at 830 Noh Washington treat faced a fire incident on Wednesday night. The family aided by five department Hen members and a separate license application was filed for another pool room. John Vrolt proposed opening at 709 12 aloet and the request was sent to the relevant committee.
