Yor gal, an elderly man, was found in June in a Chehalis area by A. Mess, a contractor. He had been deserted by a renting family, leaving two trunks of ink, a worn mattress, and no food. Sheriff Urquhart ordered the agent man taken to the poor farm and a court action planned against the deserters.
In Centralia, auto men oppose a business district ordinance banning vehicles from standing beyond ten minutes. They argue car rents aid livelihoods and enhance street activity. Mayor Guerrier vetoes the provision affecting automobilists, nullifying the ten-minute move requirement for them.
A letter from Chag. Devlin of Centralia, now in North Carolina, describes wet weather, farming conditions, and cost of land and labor. He notes crop types, yields, and plans to return home via visits to friends in Virginia and Nevada, estimating a six day trip from Asheville to Centralia.
Attachments filed with Sheriff Urquhart revealed a dispute over a donkey engine and related items mortgaged by Leban Wentz. Wentz is jailed in Olympia for borrowing money on property not owned. Urquhart found the engine claimed by Wentz was not in Lewis county and notified Olympia authorities.
William Springer, formerly of Chehalis, was arrested in Montesano on a bench warrant from Sheriff Urquhart. Deputy Tom Foster retrieved him as Rose Springer, his ex wife, alleges Springer failed to pay court ordered alimony from a divorce granted earlier. A hearing is planned for today or tomorrow.
The transient merchants license ordinance moved through its second and third readings at Cornell Street last night. Roll call showed Gonnellman and Davis voting against it, as the measure aims to shield permanent merchants from traveling bargain sales and other competition deemed harmful. An exception covers sale or transfer of business places.
A petition was presented to the city council last night requesting improvements to a street from 2nd to 4th streets. Proposals include grading laying out a plank sidewalk leveling and installing surface water drainage. The petition was referred to the committee.
Major Moss assistant adjutant general of the state guard of Washington paid an official visit to Company M last night for inspection. He checked equipment arms and ammunition and found the army in satisfactory condition though some uniforms were worn and needing replacement.
The post reports guard unit members showing improvement at target practice with high scores across distances. At 200 yards AD Lindman and Coles posted solid marks, while 300 and 400 yard entries featured Turner and Lindman among top shooters as practice lured many away.
The City awarded the paying contract for Districts 20 and 31 to Warren Construction Company after a fiery council meeting. North end residents favored wood paving, citing local jobs and material use, while south end backed bitulithic. Tensions rose as Hubbard and others pressed for wood paving before a council vote upheld bitulithic plans.
The mayor declines to sign a contract with Warren Construction Company over a disputed decision. Council plans to pursue a mandamus to compel court confirmation of the council’s ruling, potentially enabling work in the north end. The corporation aids the effort as the dispute escalates to court.
William and Robert Ross were jailed after a violent clash with Patrolman McCarter near the depot front. The younger Ross was fined 25 dollars for assault and held. the elder Ross faces a court hearing at 4 pm the same day.
The Police Department raided two pool rooms, Pastime and Centralia, last night amid enforcement of minor laws. Chief Roberts and officers secured evidence, with arrests to follow if minors are found present. Toys were cited as prohibited in such venues and further actions warned.
Centralia Public Schools will open with about a third of the last term’s staff returning. Superintendent Kellogg has received many applications from across the region with candidates from varied nationalities and teaching experience. The new force includes city superintendent Kellogg, music and crafting supervisor Wadsworth, several principals and a list of numerous grade teachers.
Manager Patton secures infielder Phil Nadaux who will report immediately. Nadaux batted .247 in the Threalye League last season and previously played in the Pacific Coast League, highly recommended by both. He joins for next Saturday's game at Raymond to bolster weak spots from last weekend's Chehalis series. Patton and club seek more high class players to avoid a repeat of the recent disaster.
The charter of the newly organized Moode Lodge in the city will close about June 22. A meeting is planned for tomorrow night to initiate a class of about Atty members. A final meeting will aim to reach a total membership near 500, and a new lodge hall on Pearl Street will house a gymnasium reading room and dance floor.
Centralia plans the first accredited state summer school in this region with Ellensburg Normal instructors, Miss Clara Meisner, and music supervisor Miss Wadsworth. Courses run 8:15 a.m. starting June 19 in the High School building, inviting teachers from multiple counties and even Portland to attend and observe.
A marriage license was issued yesterday from the office of Andrew Swofford in Chehalis to M. Kitchell of Doty and Bertha Clark of Napavino. Witness H W Bomerville, noted Napavino mill man, and Rev Dulay united the couple in marriage after the permit was secured.
