A Cen tralia promoter who had assured the public of a new plant reverses course. Welch informs stockholders that his stated aims and intentions have changed, signaling a shift in plans and expectations for the project and investor relations.
A long 1940 letter from Welch to Guy M. Walker of New York questions a February 1 date for a power plant agreement and criticizes plans to locate in Centralia Chehalis area. It urges avoiding a Chehalis plant, cites costs, and accuses Welch of duplicity while noting local council distrust and questions about Twin City company control and stock provisions.
A Nov 80 1810 letter from A Welch, manager of Twin Gigg Lights & Illan, to bond holder finy Maker in New York, claims control of Twin City Light & Traction. He states plans for a new plant in Centralia, while fiction notes a city council dismayed by the serial The Light That Failed and Welch’s alleged grip on the company.
A sizable group of property owners on North Tower between Third and Fourth Streets petitioned the city council against paving that block. The remonstrance was referred to the street and alley committee with orders to report at the next council meeting.
In Littell Washington January 6 the Lewis County coal field shows new promise with bituminous coal. More than 100 miners expected within weeks, rising to over 200 once machinery is installed and possibly 300 workers by early 1911. Local support funded the venture as confidence drives expansion.
Centralia news notes last acts of Mayor West oppose signing warrants for Special Officer Wallace Blake. West cites Blake not a U S citizen and wrongful swearing in making arrests illegal and liable for damages. Marshal Townsend releases those arrested during the holidays.
The 1911 city council opened with new year duties as Orla Smith replaces Hugh Nelson and W N Deal takes over as city attorney. All officers swore in, with no major committee changes besides temporary adjustments. Mayor Guerrier indicated committees would stay as is for now.
A bright young Polish couple from Pe Bi traveled to Prell to wed this morning. John Stopolwki and Misa Kowalotd secured a license and were assisted by Avon Doctor Syvotford. They plan to settle in Po FIL and make their home here.
In Centralia near a city sewer mouth feeding the Chehalis river several sections were broken when the Northwest Bridge Company removed a protective cover and undermined the line. Sewage now flows into the Northwest Bridge gravel pit, described as unsanitary by nearby residents. The city council pressed for repairs through correspondence with the Northwest Bridge Company. Dr. L A Hege and Dr. David Livingstone were notified, and the council continues to seek relief.
In Centralia on January 4 a well known Lewis County couple chose to marry seeking companionship in later life. Rolan B. Bartley of Swofford and Polly Clevinger of Doty wed after previously seeing their children married and settled. The couple has received wide congratulations from friends.
Florence Harris, 12, foster daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Harris, was bitten on the left cheek while playing with a Siberian spitz pup eight miles east of Centralia last Monday. The dog was killed after the incident. The wound, not disfiguring, was cauterized once the child was brought to town.
At a packed city council meeting last night the chief of police appointment became the focus. L M Townsend applied for the post after living in Centralia four years. The mayor stated he would appoint R Jackson and sought council action to confirm or reject. Several minutes passed with no motion.
The council rejected the appointment of Mr. Jackson by roll vote with all members in favor except Stewart. Mayor Guerrier said other candidates were under consideration and would be reviewed later. Chief Ingalls remains as agent of police and John Berry was unanimously chosen as policeman and began duties today.
The new Chehalis City Council met in City Hall with Mayor C. O. Gingrich presiding. Committees were announced: Finance West Corwin Sullivan. Sewers and Streets Green Fechtner Corwin. Streets and Alleys Dieckman Callison Greet. Light and Public Property West Callison Corwin. Fire Water and Health Callison Sullivan Techtner. Public Welfare Dieckman Green Fechtner. Judiciary Dieckman West Sullivan. Special National Avenue Dieckman Callison Corwin. City Hall Sullivan West Fechner. Sewerage and Engineering Green Bullvan West.
Postmaster Dan W. Bush releases Chehalis postal totals for 1910 and compares them with 1909 and 1908. The data show steady expansion in mail through the office, with quarterly and year totals rising, yielding a gain of 2,057.98 over 1909 and 34,098.04 over 1908.
Joseph A Aldridge, longtime Centralia resident, tied the knot with Agnes Gordon in a brief ceremony before Auditor Swofford. The couple, after their wedding, returned to the city amid warm well wishers and storage consignments to mark the event.
George Washington Jr a 19 year old student at Vashon College and son of Centralia’s first settler died at his home on South Iron street after a cold and pneumonia. He left an estimated $40 000 estate to his mother. The funeral will be held at the Baptist Church with Rev Flannighan officiating.
The Chehalis council last night appointed George Herndon as chief of police replacing Samuel F Townsend and named John Power as night patrolman. Details on uniforms and duties to follow as the police force reorganizes.
The Chehalis banks will receive city support for the ensuing year. The three banks are named as official depositories of public funds payable on municipal warrants. The decision was reached at the first meeting of the new council board in the county seat last night.
