History of Polk County and its early trials and growth
A historical sketch of Polk County Georgia from its 1851 organization through the 1870s notes, detailing the Cherokee removal era horse thieves, formation of vigilante groups, and eventual stabilization. It covers population, taxation, court history, slavery and postwar recovery, church and school development, land and slave property values, railroad impacts, mineral resources, and the county’s moral and civic evolution. It highlights Cedartown as the county seat, early juries and officials, and the enduring sense of community as prosperity returned.
