Pheasant Prospects Dented by Southward Bird Drift
Ken Sullivan reports from Vinton on hunter disappointment as ring neck pheasants trend southward over decades. Harry Rector, conservation officer with Iowa ties since 1937, recalls past seasons, farmer conflicts, and the shift of pheasant habitat from Benton County toward areas south of Highway 6.

Pheasants in Iowa Reflect on Habitat and Seasons
Rector recalls early efforts to establish pheasants in Iowa, noting failed band returns and how conservation clubs released birds. He describes habitat loss from farming, shifts to longer seasons, and his belief that population hinges on nesting and winter cover rather than hunting pressure or predators. He forecasts a future push for farm set aside programs to restore upland game.

Safe hunting season urged with Iowa license reminders
Iowa issued nearly 400000 hunting licenses in 1977 while others hunted legally without a license. Ten hunters died in firearm accidents and about sixty were wounded. As small game seasons begin, the Iowa Conservation Commission emphasizes safety rules and responsible conduct, urging identification of targets, knowledge of surroundings, weapon checks, and permission from landowners.

Bowhunting interest grows as urban sprawl bites
A market study by the American Archery Council finds eight of ten rifle hunters want to try bowhunting. Limited bow range forecasts more bowhunters. 64 percent are over 30, 96 percent of 1.5 million bowhunters are male. About 60,000 are women. Bowhunting has minimal wildlife impact as a recreational sport, with about 5 percent of hunters harvesting annually. Thirty years ago President Truman visited southern Illinois to win coal miner support.
