A lone hijacker armed with a pistol and grenade seized Air Inter Flight 429 after takeoff from Orly West, shot a stewardess, and forced a return to Paris demanding 12 minutes of air time to broadcast a political message. He threatened to blow up the 100 aboard unless fuel and broadcast access were provided. The hijacker released 50 passengers and crew, reducing numbers to 100. Police surrounded the plane as negotiations continued.
Oklahoma County District Attorney Andrew M. Coats said he will seek the death penalty for Alton C. Franks, 43, paroled from Cedar Rapids last week after a one hour crime spree in Oklahoma City that included a robbery a shootout and a fatal traffic crash killing an infant. If the mother dies in hospital a second murder charge may be filed. Franks had been paroled despite warnings and officials from the Iowa Board of Parole defended the release. He reportedly told an officer he would kill the next officer who confronts him.
