Carter orders stop to Meyer lobbying over California land

President Carter told Agriculture Secretary Bergland to halt lobbying by Robert Meyer that would curtail Meyer's 1800 acre Imperial Valley holdings. A 1902 rule limits irrigation to 160 acres or 320 on joint ownership, effectively reducing value of most land. Carter noted the rule should be updated and defended enforcement while denying any wrongdoing by Meyer.

Lightning Flashes Hit Eastern Iowa With Flooding Rain

Farm Prices Fall for Fourth Consecutive Month

The Agriculture Department says farm prices fell about 1 percent from mid-August to mid-September, the fourth straight monthly decline. Milk lettuce and oranges rose, but gains were offset by lower soybeans hogs potatoes corn and cotton. Overall farm prices 7 percent below September 1976 levels.

Ousted Missouri Lutheran leader Tietjen expelled

The Rev. Dr. John H. Tietjen, former Concordia Seminary president, has been expelled from the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod for holding and defending false doctrine. His name was removed from the LCMS clergy roster ending a four year case. The controversy helped split several churches and prompted formation of Faith Lutheran Church in Marion.
