A Linn County Board of Social Services meeting flagged multiple ifs in a federal regulation aimed at district wide equalization of social services. The plan could force Linn County cutbacks or raise costs in five neighboring counties to fund additional programs. Page 4A.
A dense roundup of high school games with many suspensions and postponements. Notable results include Clinton at C R Kennedy and Dubuque over Muscatine, plus Linn Mor facing Beckman with suspensions noted. Several games were postponed or suspended midgame and rescheduled for Saturday or Monday.

President Carter told Agriculture Secretary Bergland to halt lobbying by Robert Meyer that would curtail Meyer's 1800 acre Imperial Valley holdings. A 1902 rule limits irrigation to 160 acres or 320 on joint ownership, effectively reducing value of most land. Carter noted the rule should be updated and defended enforcement while denying any wrongdoing by Meyer.
Heavy rain and lightning struck Eastern Iowa causing minor fires in Cedar Rapids and Hiawatha, widespread street flooding, and several high school football games postponed. Power outages reported across Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas. No injuries or serious accidents reported.
The Senate votes 50 to 44 to table a plan to lift federal controls on natural gas prices. Senators Culver and Clark of Iowa join opponents, while filibuster leaders plan more debate as administration supporters concede the fight may be over. The debt ceiling extension also advances, forcing a House Senate conference.
The Agriculture Department says farm prices fell about 1 percent from mid-August to mid-September, the fourth straight monthly decline. Milk lettuce and oranges rose, but gains were offset by lower soybeans hogs potatoes corn and cotton. Overall farm prices 7 percent below September 1976 levels.
The Rev. Dr. John H. Tietjen, former Concordia Seminary president, has been expelled from the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod for holding and defending false doctrine. His name was removed from the LCMS clergy roster ending a four year case. The controversy helped split several churches and prompted formation of Faith Lutheran Church in Marion.
Cedar Rapids hospital officials protest a federal plan to cap general hospital beds at four per 1 000 population and require 80 percent occupancy. They warn the metric ignores local needs and definitions of community, risking steep cuts in Cedar Rapids beds.
