The Cedar Rapids Community School Board extended Superintendent Harold Guthrie’s contract to June 30 1986 while maintaining his $58 000 annual salary. A $500 monthly car allowance replaces the district car lease as a result of legal questions about leasing. The board also approved nine field trip plans including two major trips for Washington and Jefferson high schools and a ninth trip to New York City and Washington DC for orchestra players. Adams School plans were revised with students moving to Pierce Elementary next fall, with options for Adams residents to choose Garfield Elementary.

Murder suspect recounts victim with gun in street confrontation
Authorities report David Nash 37 of Cedar Rapids is charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of Paul Harrelson 21. Nash says Harrelson walked across the street with a pistol and Nash fired after Harrelson who had harassed Nash over a motorcycle dispute. Nash and his girlfriend Devine Beard provided signed statements in Linn District Court detailing the sequence of shots. Harrelson died at a hospital from a chest wound. Beard claims Harrelson threatened Nash and that she aided in bringing the loaded gun to Nash during an argument. The timeline includes prior incidents and a confrontation at Nash’s residence before the shooting. The note also mentions Grover Cleveland's 1894 amnesty proclamation for polygamy.
