Import Surcharge Doesn't Protect Farm Interests
A 10 percent import surcharge ordered by President Nixon offers little protection to American farmers says John J. Hudson of the Foreign Agricultural Service. He notes the surcharge either does not apply or is insignificant for many major crops and that it should be viewed as a long-term objective toward free world trade.

Farmers Benefit From New Economic Policy Says Hardin
Washington United States agriculture holds the biggest stake in the Nixon policy aimed at ending balance of payments problems. Agriculture Secretary Clifford M. Hardin says full employment will boost domestic farm demand and inflation fighting is welcome. A 10 percent surcharge will apply to many dutiable imports, with exemptions for duty free items and quota goods. The Foreign Agricultural Service estimates about 27 percent of agricultural imports face the levy, affecting hundreds of millions in value and leaving duration of the surcharge undecided.
