What makes a glacier run and surge across Alaska
Glaciers move as vast rivers of ice from snowy high regions. The Beardmore and Hubbard glaciers advance in a rare gallop, speeds up to 1000 feet a week, driven by heavy snowfall and avalanches. Scientists note most Alaska glaciers recede or hold, a few surge. In 1964 the Muldrow glacier surged with a peak downslope rate near 48 feet per hour.
