In a fifth annual showdown, Kennedy mounts a late goal line stand to deny Washington a payoff, ending tied at 21-21. Kennedy moves to 2-0-1. Baranowski scores thrice, Clapp adds the extra point, while Wash’s Bassett leads ground gain and Conkling sparks a 48 yard run game.
Regina defeated Linn-Mar East Central Iowa conference rival 14-6 at L-M to improve to 2-1. Regina, led by Dickens and Halsch, outgained the Lions 278 to 43, with Regina recovering a fumble for a score and Halsch later scoring on a breakaway run. Linn-Mar, hampered by injuries and turnovers, had three fumbles and failed to convert multiple chances.
Prairie High football defeated Benton Community 28-8 in a Homecoming matchup. Dostal admitted the team played its worst game of the season, yet Prairie dominated with 374 total yards to 122 and 17 first downs to four, securing their second BCS win and third win in a row.
The AP list shows multiple games with teams like Waterloo East, Mason City, Des Moines Downton, and Cedar Falls making strong showings. Notable results include Sioux City Heelan beating Carroll Kuemper 34 14, Cedar Rapids Regis defeating Hoover, Davenport Central 26 18, Sioux Central 22 6, and Herlen 49 13 over Glenwood. Several ties and no-shows are recorded, with Des Moines Roosevelt and Saydel among others posting decisive wins or standoffs.
In Clinton, the unbeaten J-Hawks defeated the River Kings 34-0 as Jeff Niehouse threw two touchdown passes and ran for another. He connected with Tim Burke for a late first-half score and Neal Johnson on a 40 yard strike before halftime, while Rick Marsh added a rushing TD and Mike Pohlena Lon Louvar caught fourth quarter passes.

Marion roared to three first quarter touchdowns and beat Monticello 41-7 in a Wamac tilt. Don Wishniewsky opened the scoring with a 52 yard run, and Randy Wade, Jon Morris, and Terry Skilling added scores as Marion stayed unbeaten in league play at 3-0 overall. Monticello fell to 0-3.
Maquoketa overwhelmed Tipton 49 8 in a Wamack conference upset. Scorers for Maquoketa included Leon Schooner Richardson Hoffman Keil on short runs, Nendal 80 yard punt return, Brown 40 yard interception return, while Tipton’s Herring scored on a 15 yard pass from Droll.
Anamosa dominated Independence with a 26-0 victory in Wamac action. New hard and Cook scored on short runs, and Richardson caught a 31 yard scoring pass from Brainard to seal the win.
Tyrrell scored twice as Manchester beat Vinton 31-14 after trailing 14-13 heading into the final quarter. TDs came from Coleman, McCuskey, Coin, and Letts with the extra point by Amon. Vinton’s Isbe threw a 12 yard TD to Fiesher and Stritos added the extra point.
Kennedy sophomores improved to 2-0-1 with a 7-6 win over Washington. Steve Kennedy scored on a one-yard run to lead Wash. The Cougars answered with a 47-yard pass from Mike Simmons to Dan Claflin and a decisive extra point by Rocky Woods. Washington suffered its first loss of the season.
Iowa City tailed Muscatine 16-6 as Jim Kafer scampered 10 yards for a touchdown and Jim Fransen caught a 16 yard pass from Greg Cilek to lead the winners.
Tim Kay ran 56 yards for a touchdown and caught 56 and 25 yard passes from Gary Per gump for two more scores to lead the Prairie sophomores over Benton Community 38 to 8. Lynn Novotny added 11 and 37 yard touchdown runs for the Hawks.
Solon improved to 3-0 behind two Ehrenberger touchdown passes as the Solon Comets defeated Durant 12-6. Donovan caught one TD on a pass from Ehrenberger, while Snider also added a Peters run for Durant.
