Road show on fire to visit Cedar Rapids during Fire Prevention Week
A St Paul expert on fire and fire power will tour Cedar Rapids October 9 to 14 for Fire Prevention Week. Jerry Mayer, a fire protection engineer, will perform Fire Power demonstrations in junior and senior high schools and two free evening shows at Kennedy High School October 10 and Wilson Junior High October 12. Firefighters hope the programs raise home fire hazard awareness. fires will be staged to show causes and prevention using Mayer's portable lab and dust explosion demos. Sponsored by Independent Insurance Agents of Cedar Rapids and co sponsored by Cedar Rapids Community Schools with the Fire Department. Additional events include Fire Safety Day October 7 with a waterball contest, Sparky the fire dog, old engines on display, and a drawing for a day at the fire stations for third to sixth graders.

Reader program founder to launch in Cedar Rapids
William Breedlove, originator of the Free Library of Philadelphia reader development program, will lead workshops this week in Cedar Rapids to launch a similar new reader program. Educators from 23 Eastern Iowa counties are invited. sessions run Thursday at Kirkwood and Friday at Oelwein Public Library from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Reservations are via the East Central Regional Library or Northeastern Iowa Regional Library.
