Nixon Approves Pacts to Cut Nuclear War Risk
President Nixon announced formal approval of two agreements with the Soviet Union to modernize the Washington Moscow hot line and reduce accidental nuclear war risk. The pacts, not treaties, take effect next Thursday and involve rapid communication, advance warning on missile launches, and a switch to satellite circuits using Molniya and a U.S. Intelsat channel. The hot line has been used only once, during the 1967 Arab Israeli war.

Nixon hints on court nominee may be a teacher or legislator
President Nixon’s remarks at the Detroit Economic Club hint at choosing a non judge for the Supreme Court. Rep Richard Poff, a conservative from Virginia, urged a candidate with deep House and Senate judiciary committee experience, while White House aides and allies push for a qualified, law and order nominee. The retirement of Justices Black and Harlan opens a broad field for selection as hearings begin October 12.
