Kirkwood names new VP of continuing education
Kim Johnson, associate vice president for continuing education and training services at Kirkwood Community College, will become vice president of the division next month. She succeeds Dee Baird, who resigned to lead Priority One, Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce. Johnson has 25 years at Kirkwood and led the ACT Center, Training and Outreach, and the skills to employment programs. She holds a BA from the University of Iowa, an MA from Iowa State University, and is pursuing a doctoral in the same program.

VT Industries Inc of Holstein Iowa plans a new Hagerstown Maryland plant near Interstate 81. The facility could start by January with about 75 jobs and up to 125 after three years. VT will invest about 11 million dollars with 6.5 million in capital improvements. Maryland and Washington County offer loans totaling 262,500 dollars to support the project.

Iowa Farmers Eligible for Natural Disaster Aid
The U.S. Department of Agriculture designates 11 Iowa counties as natural disaster areas due to storms rain flooding and tornadoes from April 25 to August 15. An additional 44 counties qualify as contiguous to the designated areas for disaster assistance. Farmers may apply for low interest emergency loans from the Farm Service Agency within eight months.
