The Cedar Rapids City Council plans to transfer downtown parking management to the non-profit Downtown District. The move, backed by the Budget Committee, would likely raise monthly parking rates and aims to improve the system. final council vote and agreement refinements are pending.
Eight city parking department employees would lose their jobs as management moves to the Downtown District. Monthly rates for core downtown spots would jump from 30 to under 50 dollars, with some ramps seeing smaller increases. The plan aims to raise overall revenue, after past freezes and current use of reserve funds to break even.
In Cedar Rapids, feral cats remain a problem years after the 2008 flood even as homes are demolished. Volunteers Darlene Van Meter and Suzette Hoyt help feed and shelter strays in northwest neighborhoods, noting kittens risk injury as structures are cleared. Demolition crews try to scare animals out, but some buildings are unsafe to enter.
The Iowa Humane Alliance hosts Paws to Party at Siebke Hoyt Jewelers in Cedar Rapids from 5 30 to 8 00 p m Friday. Admission is 25 with a silent auction raffle and diamond pendant prize. In Iowa City establishments with liquor licenses may admit patrons under 21 by walling off an alcohol-free area during city-approved events. The council voted 7-0 to start the ordinance authorizing split spaces, with two more votes needed for final passage.
Jerome Power 48 is charged with first degree murder for strangling his elderly neighbor Doris Bevins 68 in her apartment at 1211 Fifth Ave SE. Bevins died Monday at Mercy Medical Center after police found her unconscious on the floor.
