Kirkwood to absorb budget cut without layoffs or tuition hike
Kirkwood Community College will handle a 2.8 percent state cut totaling 227000 without laying off staff or raising tuition. Superintendent Bill Stewart told the board that jobs will be protected though some vacancies may go unfilled and new hiring delayed. The college will monitor expenses and apply any enrollment increases to offset the loss while a self insurance shift may yield further savings. The board also moved ahead on a job training contract with Noland, issuing certificates to fund upfront training costs via a bond-like instrument to be purchased by Chiles Heider and Co.
