Prosecutors push higher penalty for campus groping in Iowa
Iowa prosecutors seek a bill to raise penalties for assault by groping, currently a simple assault with a 30 day maximum, arguing the acts can be more traumatic. The push follows a series of groping incidents at the University of Iowa, including juveniles, fondling, and theft reports on Sept. 10–11. Nick Maybanks, Linn County Attorney, notes Iowa law does not treat groping as a sex act. The measure aims to allow treatment or probation options not available under present law.
