Hurricane Rita strengthened rapidly into a Category 5 with 175 mph winds, forcing more than 1.3 million people in Texas and Louisiana to evacuate as the monster storm approached the Gulf Coast.
Gov. Perry urged residents along the Texas coast to evacuate as Rita looms over Galveston and nearby areas. In New Orleans officials feared flooding while search teams forced doors open for missing residents, including families awaiting buses arranged by authorities.
David Janish and other inmates study English and mathematics inside Linn County Jail as part of a GED program started this year with Rev. Robert Smythe and Kirkwood Community College. Since January two inmates earned diplomas and about a dozen are testing.
Iowa studies show 79 counties with shortages and ten worst with only one dentist per 5,000 residents. Dr. Bob Russell cites aging workforce average age 54 to 55 and links dental health to overall health in Parkersburg and 740 small communities lacking dentists nationwide.
Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack said gas prices are about 50 cents a gallon too high and urged Bush and Congress to probe possible price gouging. He argued a fair price should be around 2.30 per gallon versus the national average of 2.70 to 2.80, referencing a study cited in a letter with seven other governors.
