Southern Widow Wins Bake-Off Prize for Cake
Eunice Surles, 59, of Lake Charles Louisiana, captured the $25,000 top prize in Pillsbury's 11th Grand National Bake-off for a Mardi Gras party cake featuring melted butter scotch morsels and a brown sugar frosting. She plans to improve her modest home with the winnings. Second prize of $5,000 went to Mrs Allan Anderson of Orchard Park New York for a strips of beef casserole.

Wilson Union Aecess Talks Indefinitely
Contract discussions between Wilson and Company and the United Packinghouse Workers union have been recessed indefinitely. Workers remained on jobs in Cedar Rapids while a union spokesman said the union is free to strike and a meeting was set for Wednesday at 5 p.m. in CSPS hall to discuss future action. The recess was called by the federal mediation commissioner.

Jury Chosen for Walker Farmer's Seal Corn Trial
Twelve jurors and two alternates were chosen in federal court to hear the case against Walker farmer Lloyd L. Hearing Set On Road Vacation Near Coggan
Linn county supervisors scheduled a hearing for 10 a.m. November 10 on a petition to vacate the O P Ford alteration of the M D Clark road south of Coggan. The petition, signed by all property owners along the 3850 foot section starting from Albert Bouten residence, runs parallel to Highway 13. The board also moved 24896.35 from the poor fund to the aid to dependent children fund after state comptroller approval due to insufficient tax levy to cover claims.

Belle Plaine Boy on Bike Killed by Car
An 11 year old Belle Plaine boy was killed when his bicycle was struck by a car on highway 131 east of the city. Charles Roger Franklin, son of Mr and Mrs John Franklin, died at the scene. Driver Richard Wickwire, 22, of Belle Plaine was westbound with the boy. another cyclist, Barry Markham, was not involved. The boy, a sixth grade student, is survived by eight siblings and two grandparents. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran church with visitation at Peffer funeral home after 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Two Men Fined For Drunk Driving In Cedar Rapids
Two men pled guilty before Judge Floyd Philbrick and were fined 300 dollars plus costs for drunk driving. Mark A. Brust, 30, of 198 Mayden Ave SW, and Paul Thompson, 43, of 325 Twenty second St NE, were convicted after arrests in early April 1959 following an accident on Highway 149 south of Cedar Rapids. A third man charged with the same offense pled innocent.

Kohl Is Sentenced For Rape Charge
Johnny Lee Kohl, 24, was sentenced to 40 years in Ft. Madison penitentiary after pleading guilty to a rape charge. The term runs concurrent with a 75 year sentence from Scott County on the same charge. Kohl, once a Cedar Rapids resident, was accused of assaulting a young woman in the 500 block of Fifth Street SE the night of December 16, 1958.
