Cedar Rapids Gazette (Newspaper) - September 21, 1974, Cedar Rapids, Iowa ‘Together Brothers’ Given ‘Fair’ Rating Together Brothers” with Ahmad Nurradin and Anthony Wilson. A Sanford Howard Production released by Twentieth Century-Fox. At the Paramount theater. Hollywood roting.- PG — Parental guidance suggested By Dec Halliday So far, in the wave of black exploitation movies, we have been given heroes who are cocaine pushers, prize fighters. pimps, prostitutes, con men, private detectives and hard-bitten cops. It was more or less inevitable that some film maker would make his hero a teenage street gang leader. In "‘Together Brothers” the gang leader, II J. (Ahmad Nurradin), is upset because someone has gunned down Mr. Kool (EM Bernard), a sympathetic black policeman with whom H J. has formed a close rapport. Moreover, H.J.’s five-year-old brother. Tommy (Anthony Wilson), has witnessed the murder. The shock of the experience has rendered him speechless and he is in danger of being slain himself. Pigeon Toed Director William A Graham gives us a lot of shots of the killer’s feet — he is pronouncedly pigeon-toed — as he looks for an opportunity to slay the child. H J. gets his gang together, steals police files in search of leads and begirt to track down the pigeon-toed murderer. There are a number of rather nicely done scenes in “Together Brothers” such as H.J s escape from the police station with the file and the scene in which the gang bursts into a homosexual’s DRAPORT INN All roods ore now open to ♦he Droport Inn Featuring Theirs. - Fri. -Sot.-Sun. But these are rare exceptions. The script is embarrassingly threadbare and the film bogs down several times. Spotty Acting The acting is also spotty. Nurradin has a few good scenes but his acting technique seems to consist mainly of frowning down at hts toes whenever anyone else delivers a line. Without a doubt, the best actor in the cast is little Anthony Wilson His face is the picture of mute horror as he is pursued by the murderer. He is really quite effective. All in all. however, “Together Brothers” rates an “only fair” as screen entertainment. Rehnquist Defends Club Memberships WASHINGTON (UPI) -Supreme court .Justice Rehnquist says judges would live in a “sanitized, gray world” if they had to give up club memberships and other civic activities in order to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest. He said such a lifestyle would result "in no appreciable gain that I can see for the judicial process over what I would describe as a thoroughly ethical approach mixed with some common sense.” “It can . . . end up with judges as a group living in such a sanitized, gray world that they lose some of the quality of three-dimensional human beings.” ‘Chosen Survivors’ Is Fast-Paced Thriller The Chosen Survivors" with Jackie Cooper, Alex Cord, Richard Jaeckel and Bradford Dillman. A Metromedia Producers Corp. presentation released by Columbia Pictures. At the Eastown I theater. Hollywood rating: PG — Parental gudiance suggested By Bill Uavelette Science fiction plunges beneath the earth for “The Chosen Survivors”, the latest in the how-to-deal-with-dooms-day thrillers The cast of unwilling survivors includes a predictably motley group composed of young, handsome male and young, beautiful female scien tists, a cynical business tycoon, a writer, a congresswoman and an aging black Olympic gold medal winner. The “chosen few” are deposited in a chamber supposedly beneath New Mexico w here all goes well — if somewhat tensely — until bats enter the survival chamber. Killer Bats The bats are not ordinary bats, but killer bats. Those involved in planning the project did not consider the possibility of their appearance. Gradually depleted by the bats, the human guinea pigs attempt to combat the unexpected catastrophe.
