The Cedar Rapids labor market tightened in August says H. J. Eberhart of the Iowa State Employment Service. Openings rose to 657 from 421 in July as demand increased for production, clerical and service work, while active applications fell to 289 from 447. Nonagricultural employment barely changed with 23,591 workers reported, and unemployment claims declined to 213 in August from 232 in July.

John A Hartford 79 chairman of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company died of a heart attack in an elevator at the Chrysler Building after a Chrysler board meeting. He and his brother George L Hartford 87 built the world largest grocery chain with annual sales near a billion dollars. Hartford was born in 1872 in Orange New Jersey and began sweeping floors for $5 a week, later expanding A P into a 3100 city network. The Hartford brothers, known as Mr George and Mr John, kept a low public profile.
