James Magarell a longtime Cedar Rapids Iowa City resident and interior decorator died in a Cedar Rapids nursing home on Wednesday born February 16 1878 in Atlantic affiliated with the Baptist church. Surviving are four daughters Raythorn Woodward Mary Ackerman Zelma Ulch Elenor Busch three sons William Clyde Arthur a brother Hugh a sister Rose Young and 18 grandchildren. Services will be held at Teahen chapel at 1 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Frank Ward. friends may call after 7 30 p.m. Thursday.
Richard E Stanton age 82 died suddenly at his daughter Beulah Purnell’s home in Tacoma Washington. Born April 12 1866 in Richmond Virginia he moved to Cedar Rapids from Lisbon. Survived by wife Anne a son Howard P Stanton Cedar Rapids ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Burial in Lisbon cemetery at a time to be announced.
Albert Gillespie, 87, of 1232 Tenth Street SE, died in a Cedar Rapids hospital Wednesday evening after a lingering illness. Born in Memphis Tennessee, he will be buried from Rice Funeral Home with funeral details to follow.
In Indianapolis Judge John L. Niblack ruled a landlord may not burn a fire in a tenant's furnace after Adele Abraham complained the mercury reading reached 90. The ruling centers on protecting the tenant from unsafe furnace use by the landlord.
Stockholders of LaPlant Choate Manufacturing met to reelect directors and officers. Archie D. Dennis announced a 10 cent dividend for common shares and 3 1/4 cent preferred, payable November 1. Year ended June 0 1951 sales reached 10,408,977 up 87 percent from 5,550,115 with net earnings of 340,771. Earnings per share stood at 1.02. Increased taxes and steel costs trimmed gains. The action also names Marjorie Danziger to account for sold shop merchandise after they lent 3000 for the business.
Grace Millard of Cedar Rapids sues Lumir Burian of Marion for $10,000 alleging personal injuries from a Nov. 6, 1950 crash in Marion. She claims seven fractured ribs and multiple injuries, seeks compensation for injuries and for damage to her car.
County Attorney Willis A. Glassgow said extradition papers were being prepared to return James Wiley from Tucson Arizona on a false check charge. Wiley has agreed to waive extradition. He is accused of writing a fifty dollar false check in Cedar Rapids last July.
Two suits were dismissed this week by the plaintiffs on Wednesday and Thursday. Opal Camp’s divorce action against Oliver Camp and Leland J. Van Skike’s damage suit against A. W. Peterson and Company were dropped. A Peterson Company counter claim against Van Skike was also dismissed.
Judgments were entered Thursday in two cases. Thomas H. Pirnie received 100.83 dollars against Eldon and Margaret Stevenson on a promissory note. L. J. Dennis and Son were awarded 209.39 dollars against Ronald Lacy in an account action.
Judge Charles Penningroth dismissed Edgar M. Bader’s appeal of a World War II compensation board ruling. Bader was not a legal Iowa resident when he entered service, making him ineligible for veterans payment.
Albert S. Johnson aged 37 of 1302 Ellis boulevard NW pled innocent to a false check charge and was released on his own bond. He then faced a similar Benton county charge after officers from Vinton returned him from Cedar Rapids late Wednesday.
F E Fluegel Thursday appealed a justice court account suit against Alta L Burnett to district court. The case was dismissed in Justice Miles Adams court Sept 14 on motion of the defendant.
Curtis J. Hockaday 73 retired farmer and livestock buyer died Tuesday afternoon in Delaware County Memorial hospital after a long illness He was born October 20 1877 in Almoral and lived in Delaware county most of his life He is survived by Grace Dorman his wife of 1935 a son Lloyd two daughters Edna G Cooney and Mrs Dave Fitzpatrick two brothers two sisters and ten grandchildren Services will be Friday at 2 pm at Gill Bakke funeral home with burial in Oakland

In Cedar Rapids the new meter rate offered a 75 cent saving if paid within an hour after issue. The first motorist to use the program was Francis Slach, 718 Fourth Avenue SE, at 10 29 a.m. His ticket was excused. Police noted eight motorists used the early discounted rate in the first hour.
Wiley of Clinton township and Louis A. Hinton of Jackson are cited in a zoning dispute or case, indicating two named local figures connected to the matter.

Edward Rush of Waterloo a boiler superintendent for the Iowa division of the railroad testified that sparks could not have escaped from the engines smokestack or ash pan to start a fire He drew the diagram offered in evidence Illinois Central employees from Waterloo Fort Dodge and Manchester testified that a fresh engine had been placed on the train and that no sparks or hot coals could have ignited a fire based on their experience
Three Iowa City youths James Brown Walter Ingram and Robert Peters testified in police court that they were served beer at the Amvet Club. Officials will seek a county attorney investigation and refer the matter to the State Beer Permit Board in Des Moines.
